Emergency -- Check Engine Light

Ok, I'm REALLY pissed off. I payed a fortune to have my car fixed so I can pass emmissions. My tag expired on the 16th, and my CEL keeps coming on. The code we're getting is P1457. We've replaced the purge valve, and checked all the connections, and we still cannot figure out what is going on. I cant be driving around on an expired tag, so I'm going back to the shop tomorrow. But if someone is familiar with this issue, I need some help determining what is wrong with this damn thing. I wonder if the state of GA has a tag extension policy or something?

Forgive me if I'm mistaken --- were you the one who used Carb Cleaner and did a thorough cleaning? Again - I could be TOTALLY off since I have NO IDEA what trouble code you're getting, but I know you have to be careful that any chemicals/cleaning agents do not hit any sensors in the engine bay...that can cause probs. So if you noticed the CEL comin' on shortly after doing that cleaning and you haven't been able to clear it, this could be a possibility.

Or...I could be totally off!

yea I did. That helped out the idleing, but we still get the same damn code for an "evaporative leak" or some bullshit coming from the area by the charcoal cannister under the fuel tank. The Purge Valve was replaced though, but its still saying there is a leak. Its just annoying, and I cant have an expired tag, and I've just run out of ideas of what it could be.

Have your solution!

Try replacing Canister vent shut valve, bypass solenoid valve and 2 way valve.

This should fix the leak. Might not need to replace all...but def inspect those parts and find what needs to be replaced.

Didn't realize you had this code PRIOR to the cleaning, etc. (True?)

Oh -- and you've actually been able to reset the computer and the code CAME BACK? Cuz your first line of action would be to reset it. If the code reappears, then yeah - there actually is a prob and it can be fixed.

Yea, we replaced the purge valve (The vent shut valve), and then reset it, it came on, I took it back, and they thought maybe the sensor plug wasn't connected properly, so they redid that, reset the comp, and now it came back on this morning. Maybe I do need to replace all that crap. What a pain in the ass. I hate the idea of just buying and replacing parts that I dont need though. I guess the shop could test the parts on my car and see which one isn't working?

Well, as far as I know:

code 1457 = Evap Control system leakage (evap canister area)

So yeah...check those other parts as well.

I know in Ontario if you don't pass emissions and you spend X ammount of money on fixing the probelm they'll let you by with a pass.. I'm pretty sure X = $400CAD, this might not apply in your state or an state for that matter.. I know it's that way up here..

LOL, well I've already spent $590 on it. I'm going over to the tag agent tomorrow to see if I can get like an extension or something. Then I'm going back to the shop to spend more money I'm sure.

nope. That code didn't come up (if there is a code for that) but when I went in for emissions testing the cap passed. I was just researching, and i think I can get a waiver for this year if I have spent $689 on the car. Thats $99 that I have to spend to get the waiver. But I might be able to get if fixed for less than that. The purge valve parts are not expensive. They are like 30-50 bucks each. I'm going to check with my tax agent tomorrow.

Hehe... well I fixed it alright. I ended up havin to get a waiver for my emissions, so I dont have to deal with that until next year sometime, but as far as the lights concerned.... well I just pulled apart the dash and ripped that damn bulb on out of there. Problem solved!

So the problem is still there, but you just took out the MIL? That's awesome.

Hardly. You wont be seeing any other trouble codes either, some of which might be serious. :blindfold

What Atlanta county requires smog testing? I have a friend that has moved to Atlanta from Arkansas and wants to change his tag over, but his car has a CEL on for P0401 EGR Flow Insufficient. He's been here for a couple of years (Fulton County) and not had to have the car inspected for emissions (it would obviously fail). I'm just wondering how this stuff works?

Err, nevermind on that post, I found that information. For anyone who wants to know:

If you register your car in: Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, Paulding, or Rockdale county you are required to have emissions testing performed each year.

My gas cap is tighted about 8 clicks each time. And yea, there might be something more serious, but you know what? I wouldn't know about it because the check engine light would already be on. If something gets seriously fucked up.... I'll just get an 02 or an 03 type S. I've already got it planned, and financed out. There is just no point in buying one right now. I dont need one. But you're damned right I tore out that CEL.... I'm sick and tired of looking at that yellow light every time I drive!!!!! And I'm tired of paying a fortune trying to fix it, with no positive results!!!

And you're absolutely correct. I'm registered in Fulton County, downtown ATL, but should be registered in DeKalb.... I live on the border by Moreland Avenue and DeKalb Avenue.

Are you from Canada, or did you just want a Canadian model? I travel to DeKalb a lot recently because my best friend teaches at ID Tech camps on Emory's campus this summer.

It has something to do with the canister. Have you taken it to a dealer, or does the fact it's a Canadian model make it so that emissions warranties (lots of times for many more years and miles than bumper-to-bumper ones), do not apply in the states?

i reset the CEL by disconnecting the battery.
but it came back on.
the code specifies the EVAP CANISTER.

which is in the rear of the car.

i got it thru inspection by disconnecting the battery a few minutes before inspection.
and nothing showed up when they did the OBD scan.
so i was lucky.

but at least i know it is not an critical problem.
it might be covered under warranty..

It's not a TL, it's a Camry. Those things seem to have tons of CEL problems.

Yea, I mean I spent like a lot of money replacing different parts. They hooked up this smoke machine to the lines to try and find leaks, we replaced valves and all kinds of other shit. I'm just wondering if its a bad gas cap! I'm Canadian, and I just found a really good deal on this car so I brought it down. It undergoes the same emissions testing as american TLs, but my tag was expired, and I had spent over $689 trying to fix it so I got a waiver for emissions and got my tag. I'm done messing with it right now. Maybe one of these days I'll get a new gas cap. What do you guys think about that?

A new gas cap isn't a bad idea, it's a cheap thing. It would suck if that were the problem all along, though, and you've spent all this money trying to fix it.

Its every other year in Rockdale.
