cylinder missfire codes, need cylinder numbering
cylinder missfire codes, need cylinder numbering
alright guys, heres my first post and its not a good one. Two days ago I started my wifes car, a 2000 acura TL and it started missing. It threw a check engine light after two or three minutes of running. I plugged in my scanner and got three codes, all miss fire codes. So then I figured it was the plugs.
So today I changed them, I used NGK bkr5egp, which is what came up as stock replacements and gapped them to .044, which is what came up on the parts store computer.
Started it up and it still runs like crap. Threw the light and hooked up my scanner again. P0306 which is number 6 misfire and then the generic 1399 any cylinder misfire.
When I pulled the old plugs out, they all looked fine, werent wet or oily, and where nice and tan.
Now ive beening googling alot and cannot find how the cylinders are numbered, to try to switch around coils. Any help with this?
Im about to go back to the garage and try unpluging one coil at a time to try to locate one that doesnt respond to it.
Any info would be great, I work on older stuff thats not fuel injected, so im kinda in the dark on this.

alright so I just went and started unplugging coils. As you are looking at the engine bay from the font of the car, the far right foward coil did not make a difference when unpluged. Every other one made the motor run worse, so I think I found number 6.
Is there a way to shoot the plugs in the connector with a meter to see if you pack is bad or if the harness or connector is bad? I dont want to just buy parts to try to solve the problem.

I dont have my book here- are those really the correct NGK plugs? numbers match the old ones or sticker info under hood?
NGK platinum was stock- NGK Iridium IX used by many as an upgrade
no need to gap those- come set correctly and can be damaged when gapping at home!
cyl numbering: rear set- firewall side of engine- passenger to driver 123 front set pass to driver 456
the wire removal trick may not show the bad coil
reset ECU with each movement of new coil by pulling CLOCK fuse on passenger end of dash for 1 minute

about 50 dollars for a coil, parts store or acura should have one on hand or next day
each spark plug has its own coil
you can buy 1 coil and keep moving it from plug to plug until the car runs better
Or unplug the wire connector to coil 1 at a time, and watch the tach- the one that doesnt make rpm drop slightly isnt firing
It may need a new spark plug too- be fuel loaded from not firing
ck the diy section for more help
when you install/move a coil to another cylinder you MUST reset the ECU so it cks for system operation
remove the CLOCK fuse from passsenger end of dash for a minute and put back in- that forced a master reset- its the secret backup power to the ECU

probably not
coils make the engine have a miss since its not running on all 6
what code are you getting??
does it go in gear but wont engage,
or wont go in at all,
wont move out of park etc
it the last one-
ck all your brake light bulbs are working--there is a safety interconnect on that

Hi!
I have similar problem. I got the code for 1,2 & 4th cylinder and 1399 as well.
I get miss fire only when I go to driving speed and not at idle i think. At the same time check engine light comes on vsa light comes on too.
any suggestions. I already changed the spark plugs with lower end. and it worked fine for about 6k miles, then suddenly the problem.
Any help will be appreciated!

I'm not an expert but based on much reading on this site I'd be willing to bet the cheap plugs are more than likely the issue.
same thing I said in his other post on this subject
those 2 buck each plugs suck in the TL
I dont care what the parts place told you about `they fit therefor they must work`
acura approves 2 brands denso and ngk- and its spec, because of the coil on plug ignition, calls for some very trick plugs made for the job
cant tell you the number of times seen on here- thats been the fix..the right plugs
