2003 TL-S IACV Cleaning and Engine Light

Hey Guys,

Little background: I had a misfire a week ago with P0300, P0301, P0302...P1399. I changed all the plugs, air filter, cleaned out the intake manifold exhaust & EGR ports. All the codes went away and no more engine light or misfire.

Today I decided to give the fuel system a good clean and put in some Royal Purple Max-Clean Fuel System Cleaner and Stabilizer and filled up the tank. Then took the throttle body apart and cleaned out the Idle Air Control Valve (IACV). Put everything back together and received an engine light with a P1519 code and the VSA light.

Do I take it all apart again and give it another cleaning? Get a used IACV or go to the dealer and get a new IACV? Any suggestions?

Thanks

Read the thread below for a low cost IACV alternative to the costly dealer part.

A lot of the time the IACV doesn't need to be replaced. it's become so gunked up with carbon that the valve isn't able to freely open & close.

If this is the case with yours:

removing it, disassembling it and cleaning it will make it good as new.

I bought a new one once and before installing I tried to clean the old one and it worked out fine for well over 5 years (I drive a very short distance to work < 5 miles/trip) and the next time it started to act weird I just replaced it with the new part that had been sitting there for years. same thing with my water pump which is waiting for the next timing belt change.

I have already taken the IACV apart (some of those screws were a #$% to take off) cleaned it completely where the valve was spinning freely. Re-installed it and BAM! got engine light, VSA light and the P1519 code.

Did i miss a step? I double checked every connector and hose before going to the next step. Just wanted to see if anyone else has encountered this situation.

Oops! sorry I should have read your whole post.

If you didn't have the p1519 before cleaning things up, I would recheck the connections, clear the CEL lights and check once more.

if that doesn't solve it, then I would go through the troubleshooting in the service manual to determine that it is indeed the IAC valve, and not any wiring leading up to it.

I double-checked all hoses and connector connections, everything was secure. Then thought that I never really took the car out for a good drive, to clear the airways after all that cleaning.

After about 15-20 minutes of driving I noticed a change in throttle response. Pulled over for a coffee (Tim Hortons) and when I turned the car back on the VSA light did not turn on. So I cleared the engine light and reset the clock fuse (#13).

No more engine light or codes have come up. Hopefully it stays like that...I guess the car just needed to clear it's throat
