2 High Pitched Whining Noises (TL-S)

Hi all,

My 03 TL-S has 2 whining noises and I am looking for some guidance:

Noise 1:

Radio off, under acceleration, there is a low (volume) but high pitched whining noise which I think is possibly Transmission or drive belt related. THe vehicle downshifts from 4 > 3 with a LOT of engine braking.

Noise 2:
Have my XM radio routed through the cassette adapter. If i pause the XM, there is a high pitched whine throught he sound system that goes up and down as I accelerate or decelerate.

All ideas are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

Noise one may be tranny, if it downshifts are you decelerating when it does if so its most likely the grade logic?. Noise 2 is most likely the tape adapter gettign interference.

grade logic makes your tranny hold a higher gear(3 higher than 4) when going up hill and hold a higher gear when going down hill and braking to help assist in the braking process. that is probably what you are experiencing for prob 1. prob 2 I don't have an XM adapter so I really don't know, but what fstyms1 said is probably right.

Thanks

Thanks guys...I think it may be grade logic as you say..makes sense...more pronounced when going down hill and coming to a stop.

As far as the interference in the tape adapter, would a higher quality one be better, or is there an issue with the electricla system that the dealer should look at?

Thanks,

Look into a higher quality tape adapter. I doubt you have any electrical issues.

The transmission whine is "normal" for these cars, because the transaxles SUCK. They are very noisy transaxles. High pitched whining is what they do best.

Took car into dealer for oils change (coupon) and to check out the possible transmission noise. The high pitched whine at very low volume was normal for the car as compared to another TL-S. I'll take a wait and see attitude on this...if it gets worse, it will go back in.

Thanks to all who chimed in with a repsonse.
