190K Tune Up
190K Tune Up
So, I am trying to show my Acura TL some love and give her a tune-up at 190K. I replaced the original plugs at 98K (NGK Iridium). The car has 189K miles now and I am starting to get a rough idle on startup. I have cleaned the throttle body, etc. I am thinking about giving the car a tune-up:
1) Plugs (Iridium IX)
2) Wires?
3) Ignition Coils?
Or should I just replace the spark plugs to see if the rough idle goes away? What makes the most sense at this point? Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Dre

Plugs would be a nice and easy start. We dont have ignition wires, we have ignition coils though.
Have you cleaned/inspected the EGR valve? Maybe replace PCV valve. Pull the intake manifold off (If you havent already) and spray carb cleaner inside to clean any gunk out.
Maybe even pour some injector cleaner into gas tank at next fill up.
My 99 TL has 190k and it is still getting me around as a daily driver. Would not drive it on long trips or with the family, just because we have more dependable cars though. Its enough for me to keep it and do maintenance as needed. Has been a good car to me the last 10.5 years I have owned it.

Yeah, as 05_NBP_TL previously advised......start with some good quality fuel system cleaner, maybe "Seafoam" it, clean the EGR passageways and intake, install new NGK plugs and replace the air cleaner. Simple basic tune-up stuff to keep everything operating well !

when was the `every 105` service with timing belt and water pump done?
idle issues,,start with removal of intake manifold and full cleaning of egr ports and passages inside,,not just the egr valve and 2 ports under it--the entire system from there to the end of manifold..3 cans carb cleaner and a wire coat hanger
see DIY
likely due for spark plugs
Seafoam always helps something to everything!
1 can in just under half tank fuel = 8 gallons
repeat on next tank when down to half--add a can of seafoam
wiki google or read on here of its many uses
do NOT follow other places instructions,,,we know how to care for the TL and not have any issues

I had the water pump and belts done at 101K. I cleaned the EGR valve and manifold / ant farm 500 miles ago. Not completely clogged. I used Seafoam about 20K ago in the gas tank and the results varied (air pump was cycling up and down after using initially). So just swap out the plugs? Do not bother with the coil packs at 190K?

Run some more fuel system cleaner through the gas to help optimize the injectors. The IAC valve may be sticking and causing the fluctuating idle. Make sure that your coolant level is up,.....if not have the system pressure checked as it may have a small leak or trapped air.
Also have the electrical system load tested, check all connections and grounds. Inspect the PCV valve and all vac lines. Are you getting any CEL codes ? If not, I would'nt bother with the coils yet.....but do the NGK's !

do seafoam every 15kmiles on the cleaning dose strength,,1 can to 8 gal gas twice,
or 1 time in gas and 1/2 can Master vac port method
midyear at 7500 miles = 1 can in full tank of gas to help keep things clean
seafoam didnt cause the problem,,some loosened crud did!
dirty IACV common culprit
new plugs if more than 60-70kmiles on them
coils only when they fail,,you will know when it happens!
treat them like grandmas best china when setting coils down on the workbench!!!
fragile inside,,more are damaged during plug change than actual wearout!

Tune Up Done
So, I ran SeaFoam through the car at half a tank and that seemed to help out on the idle.
I finally got around to swapping out the plugs (90K on the plugs). It seems as though the front middle plug was a bit fouled, the rest just look a bit used... Any thoughts?
Anyhow, the car runs a bit more smoothly now. I just realized that the vacuum hose for my front engine mount has been disconnected. I assume that would make the engine vibrate more at a stand still, given that they are designed to soften at low rpms?
Thanks,
dre

Yeah, the vac leak isn't helping matters. Try reconnecting it or plug it !
If the car is still idling rough, either the EGR passageways or IAC valve may be gunked up.
If you're getting a CEL, it could be a coil on the edge ?
