weird guy? or will this work?

When i was having my headers installed, the installer commented to me..."do you race this...?" I was like...."not really, but i want it faster, of course..." He then said headers don't do shit, 15 horses max, which i know, but it's the last bolt-on power mod i can do. He then said that he could tweak a lot more power out of my engine, he said call him and schedule an appointment to find out what i could do, because he wouldn't tell me yet until i come in...but he did say that he could adjust my timing belt somehow to create more power? I thought he was crazy, since i'm on this site so much and no one has mentioned that before....i asked him if it would mess up my engine, and he shook his head no....i'm confused, what else is there to tweak in the engine for power? Was he right about gaining more power from the timing belt somehow?

All and the headers will yield at least 20 whp, which I think is a good amount of power. He can't adjust anything without a piggyback or stand alone system. Our ECUs are not programmable.

"headers don't do shit"

Is this guy a joke or what!!!! At least 20 wheel hp, for $350, which is what I paid for my DC Sport headers, they do plenty, this guy is just trying to scam you, he obviously doesn't know as much as he thinks he does about our cars.

He was probably talking about adjusting the timing, not the timing belt. And I would steer clear of him.

You can't adjust a timing belt. Besides, adjusting timing requires adjustable cam gears, and well, nobody makes one for our cars.

What he's talking about is cam timing and it can be done on many cars.

One many domestic V8s, you can get adjustable timing sets or sets with fixed 4° advanced, 4° retarded or straight up (0°) settings. As mentioned before, on popular imports, you can get adjustable cam gears that do the same thing. Cam timing allows you to move the power/torque band up or down the rev range to suit the driving you want to do (popular with drag racers who won't drive the car on the street).

I'm guessing the guy wants to do that with your car possibly by putting the timing belt on the cam gear off by 1 cog, either advanced or retarded. Of course, the big downside is poor driveability, failing emissions and CELs.

Not worth it IMO, especially if he wants to use your car as a guinea pig.

Is that $350 for both headers or each? and did you feel a big difference?

I bought the headers...as a set, they don't sell them separate if thats what you mean, it comes in 3 pieces, downpipe, and both 3 to 1 pipes. I got these for $300 from my buddy's shop (special ordered em for me and gave me wholesale price) and install cost me $150. Oh, and yes, you can feel a big difference and it's WELL worth it

Unless that guy has a magic touch then hes probably BSin you to make a little extra cash on the side. I know of a way to gain around 15-55 HP....AEM EMS and a good dyno tune with a good tuner!! I've seen people gain 32 extra horse out of a stock car by just tuning.

AEM doesn't have an application for the TL. An individual would either have to use the universal unit which is $2200 or get one of the other units and custom wire it to the car which would be a wiring mess.

I'm not all that familiar with the 3.2 engine as of yet, (just picked up the new TL-S yesterday) but in regards to advancing timing I know of a variety of Maxima drivers who had their timing advanced and reported good results. I don't recall hp gains, but driveability was said to be good, and no problems were encountered. I'll try and run a search on the maxima forums, try to refresh my memory.

This may be different with the VTEC engine, I'm not sure, but advanced timing is probably a possibility. I would trust an Acura dealer more than some random mechanic though to do it... unless you are really really confident in the mechanic.

youd have to get a chip or get a vtec controller, eather way, the gains are almost not worth spendin the money on. like 10 hp. def not something that is worth sayin " ok i advanced your timing, and now your ready to race".

he probably meant adjusting your ignition timing. Probably gain a little but not worth the risk of detonating. Im not sure how much knock our cars can handle but not worth it
