K&N Drop In Air Filter
i ran a k&n drop in on my previous car (Taurus SHO) and i didn't see any difference. personally i would just step up to an ice-box if you want performance gains with a stock look and little sound change. otherwise go with a CAI.

K&N w/both intake resonators removed. Sounds like a CAI, small performance gain, doubt a true CAI would yield much more power as the intake breathes very easy now and has almost a straight path the the TB. This will be the last thing I mod. K&N filters are far superior to OEM filter, get one you'll like it.

Thanks for the input fellas.
I am going to leave my intake assembly all in tact and only replace the filter. Would there be a benefit of using the K&N filter ($30) over say a Fram ($10) in my application. Think the K&N still flows better and would yield maybe better gas mileage or nay?

now i'm not saying don't buy it. i like k&n. by all means go and buy it, just don't be disappointed if you don't see noticeable gains. personally i recommend saving your money and going for the CAI.

Thanks for the reply satin,
I do not believe i will be spending much on my TL aside from possibly suspension. I dont plan on getting a CAI. So I guess from your post i can deduce that even tho the MPG gain on the K&N filter is minute, that eventually the $20 price difference will pay for itself over time in money saved in gas ? Also can these K&N drop ins be washed and reoiled like there other filters ?

Here is exactly what is says on the K&N Air Filter Oil can:
Formulated especially for K&N gauze air filters. Red uniform color of oil indicates a properly oiled filter. When applied, the oil will soak evenly into the cotton pleats thus creating a superior tack barrier for dirt - yet allowing maximum air flow
i cleaned mine after about 20k it was a little dirty, I could have waited longer. It was very easy. you buy a 10.00 recharge kit and you can clean the filter probably 10 times with it. If you clean and reoil the filter every 30-40k or so you can get hundreds of thousands of miles out of it and it will hold up fine. my firend had a K&N drop in on his old 90 jetta and had it for about 4-5yrs and over 200k and it still didn't look bad, of course he cleaned it every 40k. 50 bucks for K&N and 10 for recharge kit=60.00 for life of your vehicle verse 25 every new OEM filter change every 25k or so. 100k= 100.00, so you save money here too. not to mention slightly better gas mileage and better airflow. take off your intake resonators and you have a homemade CAI, that sounds great too and gives you greater airflow and more power.

I have 185,000+ miles on mine and it still looks like new every time its oiled!
So, insted of starting a new thread:
Is it better to get the the "rechagring kit" with Oil PLUS Cleaner or just a spray can of the oil?
Also, how often (approx milage) do the drop in filters need to be cleaned and/or re-oiled?

This is something i've always wondered. I just got my K&N filter two months ago and it still appears clean, despite me having to drive through a dirt field everyday. My guess would be oil it after an extremely long amount of time/miles?
^^
They've got the kits at Summit Racing for ~$11 PLUS Shipping which is a little steep if you're not ordering anything else.
I am *guessing* you can clean the filter with a mild soap and water solution, so I just a spray can of oil. If necessary, I'll get the K&N Cleaner later.

I have used castrol super clean many times. It works as well, if not better than, the k&n cleaner. I would imagine most any cleaner like fantastick, or simple green would do as well. I would not try any substitute for their filter oil, but that's just me.

You dont even need the cleaning kit for at least a year-
the filter comes with the proper amount of oil on it- packed in a sealed plastic bag-
ready to install- even has a full size edge seal with holes for the bolts- stock types are straight drop in- it makes a better seal at high intake vac pressures.
pay attention to how it looks and feels for comparison later on your DIY.
it changes color after applied to filter so read and follow the included directions.
Supposedly you can go 50k miles and then clean and reoil- less if you drive in dusty areas.
Once a year seems reasonable for my area- dirt everywhere-
The small can of oil in the kit- and the entire kit contents- is designed to do the filter 5 count em 5 times- for 11 bucks of stuff
You end up doing the neighbors car too (for 5 bucks each)- since you got all of them hooked on K&N and seafoam now~
Over-application of oil after cleaning is the biggest problem- that will end up allowing oil onto the throttle plate we all dilgently spray clean----- right?!

That's right. Don't over do it. Just enough oil is suffice for the filter.
