Hello everyone. I've been working on a J swap project for a while now; a long stroke J32A2 going into an AW11 MR2. Thought I would share here; hope you don't mind my posting a link to another forum to let you catch up to what point the build is at. http://mr2oc.com/showthread.php?t=396710&page=1&pp=30 .... I also keep build threads @ MR2.com and J32a.com but the one I've provided is the easiest to get through since it's the newest; a consolidation of the longer threads.
Since I'm going to be away from the car for a few months I will be working on the engine build. I'll keep that documented here and hopefully you guys can give valuable input and advice.

I know progress has been slow lately guys. Unfortunately I have been working ~60 hours a week, I do an hour each way commuting, I'm a "fulltime" online student, and I have a wife and two year old to tend to as well. I finally managed to break away for a couple hours and here is what I have to show for it:
A single, half finished runner on my intake manifold:
I hogged it out quite a bit with four different shapes of carbide burr (egg, sphere, cyl, & inverted taper) and then started to clean it up with some sanding scrolls.
These runners are 42.5mm diameter from the factory. I brought the beginning of the runner out to 47.5mm for an increase of 5mm in diameter (or from a cross sectional area of ~14.2cm2 to ~17.7cm2) and the end, where it mates to the injector bases, out to 45mm; ~14.2cm2 to 15.9cm2. Of course the idea is to slowly decrease the diameter of the runner as it gets closer to the valves in order to increase charge velocity.
Once I get this one to a point where I like it, I will mold it and an unmodified runner to see how my attempt has turned out. Right now I still need to go into this one and do a little bit more shaping before I finish sand it.

Both of the mounts are custom fabricated and I poured all of the inserts myself. They are different sizes due to my keeping most of the factory mount point for the tranny and keeping it to width.
The motor is going to go back into the car one more time to fabricate the headers and brackets for the shift cables. Then of course I need to finish building the motor and will sort the fuel and coolant on final assembly.

Well, to be honest the pipe dream is to go FI. Really though, for all intents and purposes it's going to be NA for now, the FI would be at least four or five years on the horizon.
My pipe dream is, once all of the initial build is finished, to build a bulletproof short-stroke bottom end and run a Rotrex or two for something like 20-22lbs of boost.... think that will put me in the 675hp-725hp range and it should be peaky, linear, and completely streetable. Perfect for an MR lightweight application.
Really though, having always been an import fan, I have always had this picture in my mind of a CRX or MR2 that's giant killer. My goal is 340 @ the wheels with this build and if I can reach it, in a 2100lbs MR2, the power to weight ration is going to come in just below 6lbs. per hp. That should take care of most challengers, but I know I will want more once I reach my initial goal.

We should see what we can do to develop some concrete data on the difference between the two manifolds. The only major differences I see from photos (that would effect performance) are the bulges above the runners in the plenums. I wonder what differences there are in runner dimensions.

I'm going to guess at the meaning of TL-P. This manifold is actually from an Odyssey; no air flappy thinggy (that's it's technical name right?). My old TL-S manifold is sitting around somewhere.
Ahhh, I see. You had me second guessing myself on the choice here at first. I'm actually trying to move the torque curve further forward, so not having that manifold is a good thing I suppose. Still, I wonder how it's flow would compare if you deleted everything and opened it up the way I am doing this one.

Pretty dam good, I did my whole intake to the heads.
I striped a pair of heads today and will be starting those soon.
Maybe tomorrow.

I guess you can appreciate the amount of time and effort this takes Mr.Parker. Our manifolds are different though, and yours uses the spacer and taller horns; not good for the motor up top but definitely making some torque down low and in mid-range.

Today I ordered some cross buffs and KAY rolls to finish the rough shaping that I've done so far. Almost finished with the rough shaping, might have today had I not jacked up the shaft on my grinder; new one on the way though.
Your quip in the thread about each injector base loosing enough aluminum volume to make a pile about half the size of your fist made me wonder how much I had so far.... the result:

Weight reduction
I definitly can appreciate time put in.Because thats what it is.And the gains I felt was definitly worth it.
That's probally why I'm doing some heads now.

I really hope you are doing a EGR block off plate.
One mroe question, have you spent the time on the lower intake manifold?

I will do an EGR block off, not necessary though since the inlet on the manifold is blocked off:
I think I am going to delete the whole coolant neck assembly and go with an EWP, so I might design it into that; maybe not.

Have you spent any time on the lower manifolds and the heads? The lowers are a bottleneck as well

Not yet, but I sure will. I think I'm actually going to open this up some more as it approaches the injector base.... They are At 45.2mm diameter right now but I think I'll take them up to 46.4mm or thereabouts. That way I can take 2.5 mm from the other end of the injector base and only ~1.5mm from the ports.
Also, it had slipped my mind, but I'm going to fill the EGR channel in the port so that I won't need an EGR plate.

I guess I have so many different build threads going in different forums that I forget that some of you haven't followed the concept from the begining.
The goal here is to make 340whp. I'm obviously not going to be able to do that on factory electronics. The new MS3 system is going to be the ECU of choice.

not sure what MS3 is or not, but i'm using AEM EMS Series 2 30-6051 for Jseries swaps and so far from what we can tell, starts the engine right up. It's completely plug and play into the engine wiring harness. I'll have to report back with how the tune goes. maybe you could use that as your ECU?

MS3 is the new MegaSquirt daughterboard that was released a few months ago. You can buy it as a preassembled kit, or you can buy it in components and assemble the parts on the PcB and case yourself. I'm going to go with a DIY kit for the ECU and dual wideband.

I can't begin to say enough good things about the Standard Abrasives KAY rolls that came in last night. I started doing the finishing with regular abrasive rolls that screw onto a mandrel, and let me tell you: these KAY rolls cost much more but are one hundred and forty six bagillion times getter. No, I am not exaggerating, and YES, that is a real number.
Anyway, UPS managed to route one of my deliveries incorrectly so I won't have the mandrels for my cross buffs until next week; therefor can't finish any interior radii until then. I need to work on some homework anyway.
