buying used tranny pointers?? :P
so i bought this 1999 acura tl about a month ago and it had tranny problems, on the way home i was driving it at 60mph at 6k rpms, forcing it would only make it go into the redzone, about 20 miles in it wouldnt accelerate at all just decreased in accel till reached 0 wouldnt move it all so i pushed it into a parking lot and returned the next day to tow it home, ive called around for another one and everyones quoting me around 1k to 2.5k which is alot at the moment for me, i found one in a couple citys over for 450!!! and yes ive checked all my local pick and pull places, so ur probably gonna state why don u get in checked out, im sure its canned unless u got any quick fix its to try and fix it, i want to go buy this tranny because im sure it will be a while before another pops um this cheap again
so heres my issue i don know how to tell if the tranny is good or not any pointers?? the seller said he would provide a 30 day warranty but he works for himself so only thing that bonds him is his word nothing else.... so theres my problem tks for all help posted

'99 tranny's are much more durable than the 2000 and up models which had a 5 speed AT.
Check your codes and let us know what you're getting. Some people have tried a last ditch effort by doing a fluid change, along with cleaning the solenoids and replacing the filter.
If you are able to locate a good 4speed tranny for $450, that's not too bad. Maybe have a local tranny shop evaluate it's condition before you install it. If you can spring for a few hundred bucks more, go for the stick or an '06-7 Accord tranny. Either will require a more involved effort with the swap, than another 4 speed AT. But, well worth the time.

@3.2TLc an 06-07 5spd transmission or any for thy matter won't work without replacing almost everything from wire harnesses, ecu, and may other things. If you were to go through that much trouble you mine as well make it a manual

Hey Reaper, you're between a rock and a hard place on a limited budget. Most times, I've found that "ya get what ya pay for". As Fsttyms1 previously stated, there's really no good way to know for sure......except if it was still in the car and could be test driven !
If the tranny has already removed, your next best bet would be seeing the actual car that it came out of. If the car is still available, look for clues and telltale signs. Check the overall condition and mileage. Things like if it were wrecked ...especially if a frontal hit. You realize that most older TL's are higher mileage with an ailing tranny, even being sent to the salvage yard for that reason.

Drive it like ya stole it !
Actually car is intact I personally believe that the car is stolen and being sold as parts cause from pics the car looks perfect and when asked why sell it in parts instead whole he stated that he lost the title I personally misplaced my title to my Monte carlo 3 months ago and only paid 25 bucks mad recieved it 3 days later, I stated so to the seller than he responded with well the car is not his and it's a friends... so lol yes I know shouldn't be buying stolen property but I need a tranny -_-
Hey Reaper, is the tranny already pulled ? Man, that would've been the ideal ticket to have been able to check it out if still in the car ! Anways, check the car out: miles, potential abuse, maybe even get a package deal on some other parts.....!
Yea it's already pulled but like before stated if I don get it somebody else will my brother is actually gonna install it on sun and I guess i will see if it works he brought his snap on scanner over today to make sure it wasn't because of a code like a solenoid or something causeing it to malfunction, well the good items habeas aalready been taken
but I am actually looking for a power steering combination return maybe he might ha've it still

I had the same issue, I just had to pay for a car fax report to be safe. Luckily the place i got it from only sells transmissions from cars that have been totaled from accidents and they test them before they sell them. I ended up getting a smooth shifting tranny
