That's what I really wanna do but my boy has an 04 tl and he's droppin a 6spd tls 3.5 swap and he jus got his tranny replaced at a acura dealership so it doesn't even have 1000 miles on it and he's givin it to me for 500 bucks....which is a steal....until I decide whetherf I wanna go 6spd but I hear that swap is expensive for that type of money I can get a side car and leave the tls as auto

why would you spend that much money on something guaranteed to fail when you can cough up a bit more dough for the 6spd?

500 bucks for a tranny with less then 1000 miles on it cheap...I called a couple junk yards that give guarantee with their parts around my area and cheapest I found it was 1900 with 50k so I figured if anything I can re sell

Is there something wrong with your existing tranny?

what a ripoff. i got my 03 cl-s6 tranny for 1100. had i known the 3g tl 6mt's worked at the time i would have saved money and got that one.

www.car-part.com

6speed is just so much more fun too.

or you can just take care your current tranny and not have to replace anything. a lot of us here are still on our original tranny.

but if you really want a backup i would agree with the others and go for a 6 speed.

reading all this a question came to mind does any one have a rough guess at how much power at the crank our tls could manage without getting serious problems im wondering could they handle maybe 40 to 50 more BHP at the crank ?

thanks in advance for the info

^yes they can handle the power, you will just reduce the life span on the tranny if you use that extra power. mainly burn up the clutch packs faster, which we do a good job at stock.

as far as breaking things, you should not be breaking things at 40 more hp. it would be a good idea to inspect the axels and cv joints for play make sure the motor mounts are not badly worn, as a precautionary, since they are common weak points in our cars.

From what iv read you could prob handle 330, that would be like all bolt ons, maybe a supercharger, but thats about it.

others should chime in, because i don't know what the maximum power is, i would think its could handle 330. i do think the 6-speed manual is able to handle up around 400 hp if i am not mistaken.

also dont forget to clean out the intake and dump out the baby foxes and hamsters you sucked up there, since you'll be running that much power.

Weren't the early 3G TL trans also plagued with problems? I think the mid 07+ trans for the TL were redesigned.

I'd go with a CL 6spd manual.

basically all they did to the 3rd gen TL was give it electronic throttle control and programmed the throttle cut in and out during gear shifts to minimize wear/heat on the clutch packs. so when you put it our cars, our ecu cant do that so they will pretty much get the same problems as we have now. most new cars have this now, its good in a way, yet bad in a way since the tranny will fail the same way ours do, just takes longer. i had an 09TL as a loner car when i had my tranny replaced, floored it a few times and its tranny felt very familiar to ours. you can feel the electronics doing their works, but over all i wasnt impressed, it felt like it was about to start slipping, not good. maybe it was becouse it was beat on as a loner car, but it doesnt make my confidant in honda automatics any better.

Man really ? I wonder why such a big and well known car company cannot create a decent automatic problem free for the life time of the car

I was under the impression that the 2007-present TLs shared their 5spd auto with the RL which is a different design when compared to the 2nd gen and 04-06 3rd gen, and this tranny has supposedly not shown to have any of the lack of oil flow issues to the 3rd clutchpacks or any other known reliability issues.
