Angry WTF.. why is my car having trouble starting?

sup guys. ok, i posted this once.. and i thought it was solved. this is my problem:

when i try and start my car.. usually from cold starts.. sometimes.. my car almost seems like i have no gas or something. cause it struggles to start. last time i posted someone said to turn the ignition to stage II and then start. this was working for me. but today.. i got out of my training... (for my series 7) and it was pretty damn cold outside today. i did my usual, turn the ignition to Stage II and turned. from the point i turned to the engine finally starting.. about 3 seconds. does this seem odd? i think so. anyone have any idea what i can go to dealer to say whats wrong? ive already gone to the dealer.. and they said they couldn't find anything wrong.

that's a bit odd. my gf is in LA and i know how cold it is there. however it's nothing compared to here in san jose. but yet i never have any problems with starting my car. i always need to park my car outside my office for the whole day, and the car gets really cold when i am off.

when i start the car it always goes on immediately and stays at around 1100rpm. no delays, no jerks, no lags. i don't even have to stay at stage 2 at all. i can't tell you what's wrong with your car but it doesn't sound right....

maybe you can leave your car at the dealer for a whole night and tell them to try starting your car the next day morning?

Dumb question: Wth is stage II?

I have also noticed that my car sometimes has trouble turning over as well if its fairly cold outside.

Chrism,

I have this same problem. I got the car in October, have 6200 miles on it and its had difficulty starting 4 times already. everytime, the car has plenty of gas in the tank, and I always let my car warm up before driving it. Atleast for a few minutes just to circulate the oil. When i take it in to get the oil changed, I will tell them about this problem. Im taking it on friday for the oil change. Ill post if they find anything unusual. I highly doubt that they will but you arent the only one that has this problem.

the key that you insert into the ignition...how many other acura/immobilizer keys are on that same key ring? if you are like me, you will be carrying more than one (black and valet). i hear that the chips in both keys can cause the immobilizer to go wacky. so try using a single key without another acura key close by and see what happens.

my car is kinda slow to start compared to other cars i have owned...not sure why or if it's a problem, but it's ok for now (i guess).

Eh, I've had the same problem...I'm switching out my spark plugs...and will probably switch to magnacore ignition wires and a few other things...but my car actually took 5-6 seconds to start a few times...

Angry Me to

I have had this problem about 4-5 times. Weather doesn't seem to matter - it has happened when it was warm and when it was cold. 9000 miles. Let me know if anyone finds a fix.

When did Magnacore come out with coil-on plug wires? Didn't think they had them.

A listed problem with the CL-S is that after running your car for 10-15 mins then shutting engine down and restarting engine again, takes excessive cranking of the engine. I have had this prob before.

I have had my Acura TL-S for three weeks now. It has 910 miles on it (all babied and I haven't yet took the car above 4000 RPMs yet). Twice now it has taken three to five seconds to start. One time it was in the morning (after it sat overnight) and it was about 25F. It took about 5 seconds to start. The other time was several days later when I went to lunch (the car was sitting for about 4 hours and it was aorund 50F) and I cranked it over for about 3 to 4 seconds and it wouldn't start. I shut it off and cranked it again and it started right up. Sounds like there may be a wide-spread problem. I had a 1996 Toyota Avalon for two years (I sold it four months ago). I put 30K miles on it (I went from 60K miles to 90K miles) and never once had this problem! This is disconcerting when your car is brand new!

I've had the same problem you describe, but only about 2 or three times. On all occasions, the weather was warm and the car had been sitting at my work for hours (the engine was not warm.) I only have 5500 miles on the TLS. I seriously doubt it is the battery/starter/plugs etc.as this only happend a few times. We've had colder weather in MD (some mornings in the 20s) and the problem didn't surface then. I think the most reasonable guess so far is the ignition imobilizer system, probably something didn't register with the key inserted.

Trouble starting

I only have 340 miles on my car (have
had it 5 days). I did notice it took
longer than normal to start once,
about 3 seconds, but it hasn't
happened again. This was on
a relatively warm (65 F) day, car had
been sitting outside a few hours. I wasn't going to worry about it unless it happened a lot.

7800 Miles, and it's happened 1-3 times, I get confused with my wife's car. One time it took 3-4 secs, and it sounded exactly like the way my wife's Accord sounds when I run the gas tank down to E. On the Accord, this similar problem is very consistent. But no relation to weather.

Maybe you're holding the key too long? I don't know what kind of effect it has, but I usually only have to twist the key for a sec and the engine always fires up. But there was a couple of times when it didn't.

This has happened to me 4-5 times. I have had the car since December 2001 and I have 1800 miles on it. It is VERY annoying when it does happen. I have had to reset the key and crank again. I also tap the accelerator a bit (old habit from when I had non-fuel injected cars). It has happened on warm days, cold days, first start, >first start, etc. It is quite random.

The best explanation I've heard is that it has something to do with the immobilizer chip. But I'd like to get a more technical explanation of how it all works and why it could be messed up.

Would it help to hold the key near the ignition for a few seconds before inserting it into the slot? Would this give the "computer" a few seconds to sync up the key code with the immobilizer? (I'll try this for a couple of days and see if it helps).

All I know is that the hard starts are annoying.

Does it take 4 to 5 seconds of cranking, or does it wait 4 to 5 seconds before the starter even spins? Does it sound slower, maybe the starter isn't turning the engine over fast enough, I believe it has to go through 3 complete engine cycles before the ignition will actually fire.... Also, could this be a vapor lock or some kind of fuel delivery issue?

My experience has been 4-5 seconds of cranking. Starter turns over as it normally does, my guess is there is either no spark or no fuel...(gee I guess it couldn't be anything else on a new car huh?)

On thing I may be inadvertantly doing is hitting the gas pedal on these occasions. I know with older fuel injected cars, this can cause starting problems. But, I think I'd remember if I depressed the gas pedal.

Works for me

I had a Honda Civic that had this same problem. The mechanic told me to push the accelerator to the floor and release before cranking and I never had a problem since. It seems to work on my friend's new Accord V6 and my TL also. It doesn't make since with the fuel injection, but hey...

Low tech, but it has worked for me.

Thumbs down

same with my car. I bought it last year August, 2001 and has 7000 mile on it. It happens 3 times after work (leaving the car for about 8 hours in the parking lot). I had to try twice to start the car. Also it happened 4 times in my garage (again after about 8 hours - overnight). So it is not only me... I guess. WHAT THA _ _ _ _ IS GOING ON HERE!!! I paid over 30K for this car. Acura Build quaility is VERY BAD! I still have to fix rattle noise in my car too.

Do you guys have that Mobil Speedpass thing? If that's too close to your car key, your car will not start. That happened to me once and I took the speedpass off my key ring and I have not have that problem since.

I thought it was just me!

To add to the list, I also have this problem as well. It's happened about 5 times for me. I bought mine in Sept. and have 8000 miles on it. As most people have said temperature doesn't seem to be a factor.
When I turn the engine, it feels/sounds like there is no fuel to crank it over. It took about 3-4 seconds and when it did turn over, the engine barely caught and was at 300-500 rpm for a second before hitting the normal idle of about 1000 rpms. If this is a mechanical problem, I wish Acura would do something about it.

I have had the same problem, only after my car has sat in the garage for the night. It is very periodic, but always starts on the second try. I think it comes as a surprise when these cars do not start right away.

ok.. im hearing that a lot of people have this problem. but no real solutions. i dont think it has anything to do with the keys, cause my car keys are held seperately. its just my car key and alarm. ( i do this so i wont scratch up that area when im driving. ) well, that problem.. it taking a few seconds to start, i thought since it was the first time it has taken soooo long, i thought i would have problems starting the car this morning. and of course, it started with no problems today. so im confused!!!! the dealer told me to bring the car in one night and leave it so they can start in the morning. but after this morning... and since it didn't happen, i dont know if i should take the car in, i dont want to not have my car over night. DAMN IT!!!
