Whining/Squealing Sound
Whining/Squealing Sound
I just noticed a whining/squealing sound coming from my engine only when I accelerate. What are some possible ideas that could be causing this? The timing belt was just changed last year, could I have slipped off a little?

Yeah, ^^^^ as Skirmich said.
With the car parked and motor running, see if the noise is originating from the drive belts, accessory pulleys or idler tensioner.
More than likely a worn dry bearing or a misaligned belt.

I don't hear the sound while in park or neutral, just in drive. Like Carson said, I only hear it around 3rd gear. I had problems w/ 3rd gear when I first got the car & I didn't know about the trans in these cars & got it fixed, but it still feels different than the other gears. It wasn't fixed by Acura, but by Amcco, who only deals with transmissions & I have a lifetime warranty on it.

So I took some video while driving to see if I can get audio of the "whining" sound, you have to listen really close it doesn't start until 25 seconds in.

if you turn it up and listen really close you might be able to hear it. from 25 seconds to the end is when it became audible. its the high pitch "weeeeeeeeee"sound you hear. yeah no, its not there when I'm idling (trust me I've had my head under my hood enough that I would have caught it a while ago...) only when I'm moving.

If that doesn't help, turn up some good ol head bangin' R&R.

Haha, I usually do have the radio blasting, so I can't hear anything. Lately everyone I pass by starts looking at me & I'm like, what? My car can't be a head turner yet?!? It's still stock! That's when I turned off the radio, rolled down my window & listened to the heart of the car, yes the engine. I think all I have to do is a tranny flush & oil change & I'm good to go... I hope. (Yeah, I'm overdue for an oil change)

Careful with the tranny flush. If the car hasn't had it done every 25k to 30k miles, new fluid may damage your tranny. If the fluid is old, you're better off flushing like a quart and adding a quart. I had mine rebuilt, this is what the tranny specialist and all mechanics I've ever dealt with have told me.
About funny noises, I get mine from the power steering pump. I also get like a crackling sound every so often. I think I have a pulley or something that's bad. I should record a video of that and get some feedback from Aziners like you did.
Actually now that I'm really paying attention to the sound it most audible in first and slowly fades until the sound is gone in 4th gear....oh well, I'm not too concerned, it just sounds like regular car noise.
I recently noticed a "whine" as well when on the freeway. I haven't messed around with speed or gears yet, but it's only when on the accelerator, if I coast it goes away. If it were a belt or what not I'd suspect it would make the sound regardless of accelerator and be dependent on RPM speed. I had a similar sound on my 1977 Datsun 810, exact same sound but louder and only when I pressed the gassed and released did it happen. I'm assuming it may have to due with the intake? What all changes on the car when the accelerator is pressed? (besides rpm haha) That should narrow it down.
Yeah, sometimes it's a good thing to actually listen to your car's sounds as they can possibly be telling ya of impending mechanical problems.
