That's the right time for this car.

BTW - don't ask fsttyms1. He'll tell you the right time to change a timing belt is 450,000 miles! j/k

Well, to keep themselves safe, I would think they deliberately under-quote the service interval to keep millions of people from destroying their engines. While I think the 105K is safe, I'm sure there are a small percentage of people who have belts with manufacturing defects that go a lot sooner, but this is to be expected.

Anybody has a reported case of timing belt failure? Interested to hear those with 99 TLPs, when (as in miles) do you replace yours?

Im going to this Christmas break...I have 80K now. That is because I will be home with all my dad's tools mainly, but common knowledge says thats about time...not like they are expensive - now that I think about it, I can do it myself right?

Just remember that people normally get their water pump changed at the same time. I've heard that changing these items on a TL is a real pain in the ass, and even takes a trained mechanic several hours.

That's why dealers charge so much for it.

I replaced mine at 125,000 miles. But also you want to factor in the type of driving you do (stop and go, etc) and also the weather conditions (extremely hot weather might require you to change it sooner).

2003tL-s 41k mi. I've been hearing this clicking sound when the car is idling- and i think its the timing belt thats making this constant clicking - like 5-10 times per second. It's there when i'm in park or drive, and its still there as i'm slowly accelerating, but once i'm past 20mph it either goes away, or i cant hear it anymore cause of engine noise. Does anyone this I should have this checked out? Also I heard something about a timing belt tensioner recall-- could i have this whole problem fixed under warranty?

It's not the timing belt making that noise it's most likely the the valves or lost motion's making that noise.

thats not your timing belt you hear. some TL's have experianced noisy fuel pressure regulators, that is the ticking you hear. you wont hear a ticking from a belt

the owners manual in my 2000-TL states that it should be changed at 60K miles, if the car is driven in conditions as follows:

in very high temps. (over 110 Degrees)
in very low temps. (under -20 degrees)...

and after reading this article http://www.cartalk.com/content/colum...00/May/09.html

and learning about the how our cars have an interference engine...i cinclude that waiting and waiting and waiting is a bad idea...as damage can be costly$$$$$$

what do others think of this????

yes i am. im not worried about it in the least. every honda i have owned has made it over 200+k on the original belt. i have inspected mine acouple times and its fine. most timing belts go due to AGE not miles. they say a mileage thing because with the "average" driver (12-15k a year) that is 7 years of age. i have only 4 years belt is in good shape.
thats just me though. change it by the manuals #'s if you are worried.hell if mine were to go id just turn it into a 3.5 or larger.

fstty - If it were my car, I may chance it. However, my wife has an Accord and I don;t gamble with her car.

When I get a TL (as I'm shopping for one now), I may not change the timing belt at 60k, but I'm not going to wait til 100k+. But, at least we both know the risks.

I have ~93K miles on mine right now. I will probably change it @100-110K miles.

The ticking is not the fuel pressure regulator, it is most likely the purge control solenoid....and the ticking means it's working, maybe louder than normal but working. Fuel pressure regulator, thats funny.

the ticking could be anything guys.... but its such a fast tick i doubt its FPR or PCS...

Im at 106,000 miles and still on original timing belt. Im with Kris, ill be pushing it to at least 150,000. I've also inspected my belt and its simply not old enought to worry about yet. And i would like to replace the water pump at the same time but i doubt i will. Ive learned that shit simply does not break on this car... Unless its the tranny :P

But honestly if i had the money, i may switch it earlier....

If you do mostly highway driving, you can go even longer on a belt before replacing since the belt isn't really taking alot of stress.

If you do alot of stop and go, the belt will have more stress put on it.

laugh all you want, but man have had it. there is also a canister right infront of the rear (driverside wheel) that causes a pulsing/ticking noise also

actaul the fast ticking is the fuel being pushed thru on its cycles. and they are fast. i had the ticking awhile back (i smaked it with a screwdriver due to me being impatient and hating the sound) and it went away

well, considering my car is certified and covered to 100,000 miles they have to replace the engine of it breaks before that. I will replace it then.
