When to change brake pads?

What is the average lifespan of the OEM pads (front and back)? I know it varies depending on individual driving patterns, but does anyone know a range?

Thanks,
Peter.

I kept hearing screeching sound from the front brakes... and when I did a 30K mile major tune up last saturday. My front had 2mm left and rear was 6mm left. The dealer recommended the front brake pads be replaced. So I did.

When u start hearing screeching that tells you that you need to replace your brakes. It tells you in the manual that the car is equiped with the "feature" that it will sreech when you need your brakes replaced.

Okay, so how did you guys hook that up? Were they wearing out prematurely? Do you know when the cutoff is (as in at what mileage they stop giving out free pads)?

Peter.

Peter.
I took my car to the dealer for service the other day and told them my steering wheel shakes when I step on the brake. That's it.

They replace front brake pads and re-surfaced the both front rotors.
