Exclamation Wheel size affects HP...........Seriously

Just to let you guys know, today it was proven on the dyno that wheel size affects hp. We have a Type-r @ the shop and dyno'd with 17" wheels and then with 15" wheels and the car gained an average of 15hp @ the wheels...........we dyno'd more than once to correct for errors.............

umm...im not sure i understand. you make a car lighter and it gets more horsepower? i understand if your car gets faster with smaller wheels because there is less inertia to spin from a standstill. so going from 5 passengers to 1 will increase horsepower too? hehe...not sure what wheels have to do with the engine.

Lighter whls will not increase overall HP of the engine ("at the fly(wheel)") but will increase the HP that the car can deliver to the ground. The HP "at the wheels" is what is usually checked by a dyno, although you could dismount the engine and put it on a stand to see HP at the fly.

So, lighter whls will spin easier, and therefore allow you to apply more HP to the whls. More specifically, you can put more TORQUE down to the whls with lighter whls. HP is just a mathematical derivative of torque. Torque is the stuff that makes your car jump off the line, and is what most people are referring to when talking about power. Torque=twist, HP=work.

But extra 15HP at the wheels? Man, the price of looking good just got higher! I'm assuming that the 17s were heavier...

By experience, I know that wheel offset will affect HP!!!
So, correct offset is very crucial!!

Question

I'm going to assume that the overall diameters were different between the two rim-tire combinations. Otherwise I find it hard to swallow!

I'm pretty sure they were not different by much.

Whoa whoa, I'm confused...you gained more horsepower with 17's or 15's?

Wow! That is really awesome! Do you guys know if the Accord EX Alloy wheels are lighter than the Accord LX steel rims? I was always wondering my car dyno'd stock at 155hp when most people were telling me I should have gotten closer to 160hp.

Yet another reason to get the Racing Hart CP-035's!
