What do you guys think about Radar Dectectors??

I have cops infesting my entire area block all the time. Its a big strip of wide lanes and lil people and yet the limit is 40km, dunno how to convert to mph. Just thinking If i should get one, not just because of my area but in general. How much do they cost and what is good?

Actually it is physically painful for me to drive without one. Are not radar detectors illegal in your Province?

IMO, if you drive fast then definitely get one unless it is illegal in your area.

very illegal in toronto ontario

i wonder if the police have a radar detector detector?

as well...in toronto, the police use lasers and not radar anymore

I wonder if radar detectors....detect lasers?

what a confusing post.

Police can use VG2 to find out if you have a radar detector, but most of the new ones are VG2 "proof".

BEL 980 all the way. This is has more stuff than the K-40 and is way cheaper and way better than the Valentine.

Wouldn't drive without one. Those who say they are a waste of money don't know how to use them. Just 'cause you have one doesn't mean you'll never get caught.

You need to be careful with cops using "instant on" (try making sure that there are cars up ahead so you'll detect when they are zapped.

Laser is very difficult to detect ahead of time, so if your detector is indicating laser, it's probably too late.

I have an older Passport (4500) and it still works flawlessly and it has paid for itself many times over. I have debated getting a new one, but for pure detection purposes, mine still does great. Although I don't have some of the new features available in newer detectors (i.e. Hazard warning, railroad warning, signal direction, etc.)

Oh yeah, highly illegal in Canada.

I have an old passport 5000 and it still works great. I normally won't take the lead, I will let at least one car take the front then my radar picks up when he's getting clocked. You have to remember they only work if the cop has his on and you still have to watch out for traps. I feel naked without it though.

false alarms?

I have a passport 4500, and I get very few false alarms. The couple i do get are in the same area all the time so I know when to expect them. The 4500 is great its saved me countless times.

Yes. That's why Ontario cops use anti-radar detectors to check to see if you got a radar detector or not. If you plan on getting a radar detector, go with Bel. It is an anti-anti radar detector detector (a radar detector that detects police using anti-radar detectors - this is complicated ). It shuts itself down or the signal it produces becomes minimal (not sure which). Do some research and you'll find out. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Ditto here. I always drive with it on the "highway" setting and only get false "X" band when driving by a grocery store.

For the question about legality in California. They are legal in all US states except for Virginia and Washington DC.
