Unhappy Weird whining/scraping noise from Engine

Own a 2002 Acura TL, no mods, tranny replaced once at around 15000 miles. Currently have 25K on the car. I drive the car normally, no testing the limits. Car is maintained regularly tho' must admit, have been a bit lax this time - the last oil change was at 20k.

Yesterday, on starting the engine, a weird loud noise came from the engine(seems from the pulley/belts) and stayed that way. Almost sounded like an old diesel truck. On driving it changed to a high pitched whine.

I am taking it to the dealer monday but would appreciate any thoughts on what this could be.

Thanks.
Sujoy.

Was the A/C on? Did the pitch change when you turned the wheel? Did the pitch change when you revved the engine?

Could be alot of things from either a belt slipping to an alternator going out.

good luck.

The A/C is off but if you rev the engine , the pitch increases , and turning the wheel also introduces another high pitched noise in addition to the constant whine. This whine seems to be coming from the topmost pulley attached directly to the engine.

Thanks!

It sounds like you might have bad bearings on one or more accessory. That top most pulley is your power steering pump. If the sound is louder when you turn the wheel, it could also be that your power steering pump is going bad.

Time to go to the dealer.

You had your tranny replaced so my wager is that they reused your timing belt. check the tension of your belt, it might need to be replaced. while you are at it, replace the ac belt and the balancer belt also.

Thumbs up

Thanks guys. The power steering fluid was low. I refilled today, and the noise has lessened. Guess will have dealer do the rest

Have them check for leaks. Power steering fluid is not the type of thing to get used up. If it gets low, it had to go somewhere (probably a leak).
