Question Weird buzzing noise when backing out.

Hey all,

I'm not sure if I should be worried by this or not. When I first start up my car, I let it sit for a minute or so. I then put the car into reverse. While I'm backing out, I hear this low buzzing noise and feel a low-level vibration. It lasts for about a second. After I put the car into D5, when I step on the accelerator, it does it again for about a second. Should I be worried? Or is this just because the car is still warming up?

Nope there are a couple of sounds and things you will feel, one is the ABS self check, and I believe the other is the air bag system or a second ABS check.

It's the ABS check. Mine does it everyday as I back out of my garage.

I just wish Acura salesmen would tell new owners about it. We've had this question asked here once a week for as long as I can remember. I bet there are a bunch of annoyed TL owners out there thinking there's something seriously wrong with their car.

The buzz you are hearing may have nothing to do with the ABS check. I think what you're referring to is the sound your passenger side mirror makes when you go into reverse.

The TL-S was designed with a passenger side mirror that shifts angles when you go into reverse, so that you can see the curb or anything on the ground, to avoid hitting anything lower or out of sight.

Once you put the car back into gear, the mirror reverses itself to the normal position. That is the buzz you are hearing.

The ABS may be what you feel, but the way Fortunate described it, with the reversing and going into D5, it sounds to me like the mirror is what he hears.

True you will hear the mirror, I was responding to his statement about feeling it. Either way you can hear them both and the feeling is the ABS

In my case, it's definitely the ABS. I have a 2001 which does not have the tilting mirror feature.

I dunno about you guys but even with my slight loss of hearing due to years of riding my motorcycle without earplugs I can clearly distinguish between the ABS buzzing noise and the whirring noise of the passenger mirror tilting when the tranny is in reverse. IOW--just based on the sound alone it isn't at all difficult to determine if the noise is the ABS check or the side mirror tilting, other sound sources notwithstanding.

Are you moving at all?

It's probably the ABS checks. In this very old thread, I guess no one read the car manual

One buzz at 5 mph, one buzz at 15 mph. Whether you're going in reverse or in drive, once you hit those intervals for the first time, it will buzz.

Not even at 5mph and one after the other. Good guess I haven't read the manual regarding this issue.

Where can I find the humming noise described in the owners manual? I looked in the brake section and other suggested pages but did not find any info.
