See if you like this idea....
I like a website that is easy to navigate and I can go back to where I came from easily, kind of a menu navigation...
You can make yours with images or just names, but make sure you always show all choices to the user to navigate anywhere from anywhere not only from home page.
I think the easiest site to navigate is www.yahoo.com, and if you add pictures to the names it should be nice.
If I think of something else I'll let you know.

Just my 2 cents...

Take a look at www.pricescan.com
They give you the search option, then all high level categories, plus as you go in they keep track of where you are and also have the main categories on the bottom... kind of like Yahoo... very easy to navigate even for a newbie...

Just to let ya'll know, you're going to have to do better than my design.
http://sirris.com/natedogg/design.html
Watch the upper left hand corner about 3-4 seconds after the page loads for an added touch.
See how I did the navigation with drop down boxes? Those are the 3 ways you will be able to search for parts:
1) Category
2) Manufacturer
3) Make and Model
After selecting one of those you have the option to either view all of what you selected or select one of the other 2 selections in order to narrow your search.

A real browser... we can talk about it forever... matter of preference... thats all.
I'm not an artist and I don't pretend to be a web designer. However, I am a developer and do this sort of thing everyday. Yes, the inputs aren't wrapped in a form tag and so will not show up in Nutscrape. But it is obviously a prototype.
And if you are a developer then you should think about every possible situation... especially in such a wide are as internet!!!
P.S. If I'd come to a cheaply designed site like you posted I probably wouldn't even go further and if I do I'd be very doubtfull to order anything from someone who can't do a simple thing right!!!

Don't they all look like a copy of each other?
Like I was saying... if you going to do something do it right!!!
Why should I waist my time for $300, I put in my idea and I hope it helps in Snook's decision that's all...
You probably know what price a good developer charges... ooops... forgot you are NOT a good developer... well the price is above $150/hr...

LOL... Wake up and smell the coffee...
Look at Acura TL... a copy of Honda Accord!
Lexus LS430... a Mersedes made by Toyota, it even looks like it!
Cadillac Escalade....wow a souped up Yukon!!!
... and the list can go on and on and on...
Yahoo has a proven design!!! Use it to your advantage, why create something that's already exists!!!
P.S. How I manage to make my 2 cents is my problem... you should be worrying about yourself...

Hmm. I've been involved in the 'Net business since 94 and any webpage should be viewable in either browser regardless of what you use.
Copying a design is wonderful but it isn't surely unique or orginial and I wouldn't shop at a site that reminded me of yahoo. But thats my choice as a consumer and I don't plan on converting anyone else to that. That being said every developer has his/her own style that makes them unique. As everyone should be able to take constructive comments and thoughts.

First off cause here Tim is running a site for everyone to share information regarding their vehicles and he doesn't charge a cent. His money is made off the parts he sells. Sure 300 isn't a lot to design a www site but if your doing it strictly for the money you shouldn't be involved in it. I think most people here who are working on it are doing it for the fun and to give something back.
And thats my .02 cents.

I agree about the browsers and any finished product by me will work in both. Unless its my personal webpage, then NS users will get a hate message.

My design was my shot at this. I didn't *need* to create it. Its not something I was hired for, even if it gets used, because I'm a developer, not an artist. If you don't like it, I don't care! If you have something constructive to share about it, go ahead.

I'm doing the database work for Tim and that's what we have planned:
First you select Category, Manufacturer, or Make & Model. Then the next page asks if you want to want to narrow your search by selecting one of the other two or just to view all.
Heres a little demo...
Say a user is looking for springs for their Acura TL. They decide to select the Springs category. Then they can choose a manufacturer OR the make & model of their car OR they can choose to view all the springs by all manufacturers for all cars. Lets say they enter Acura TL for make & model, they are then presented with all the springs that would fit an Acura TL.
As you can see there are many different ways to search and find what you are looking for. How we display search results is going to be very important.
The different scenarios (those with a * are entered by the user):
*Category, ALL Makes & Models, All Manufacturers
*Make & Model, All Categories, ALL Manufacturers
*Manufacturer, All Categories, ALL Makes & Models
*Category, *Make & Model, All Manufacturers
*Make & Model, *Manufacturer, ALL Categories
*Manufacturer, *Category, ALL Makes & Models

.Ya i agree there are quite a few ways to break it down.
I think the most common will be
Manf*Model*Year -> Part or list all parts
Part*Brand*Manf*Model*Year
As well as just parts by themselves. I think pushing the direction of picking the manf. will make it alot easier to work with.

SQL does suck, thats why I'm not using it.
I'd like to keep it as flexible as possible - customers may not know from what manufacturer they'd like to buy or they'd like to see all the parts Tim carries that fit their car.
As for specifying a year for their vehicle, maybe we could have that as an optional field if they choose to specify a make and model?

Ya I think you need to break it down to the detail level.

I'm a bigger fan of javascript myself rather then simple drop downs.
Tell me what ya think. I am working on making it more detail driven down.

The javascript dropdowns are nice, though not more functional than your run-of-the-mill dropdowns.

Allowing the menu to have a second level is good for makes and models, that is added functionality... although the makes and models list might grow pretty large.Heres another demo of java menus.
As far as graphics, autocarparts.com is fair game. Here are some logos in a .psd that will help.
Would be nice to see some new logos.
Creating a page design is more of a job for an artist -- it seems like developers would rather do it hehe... this is what my design looked like before I turned it into an actual page. If someone with artistic skill spent some time on a cool design that Tim liked, they'd probably win the $300 and I could turn their image into a page.

Well there goes my idea. I was thinking of something like speedoptions site with the left column of the page dedicated to navigation. Reminds me of Windows explorer. Anyways good luck guys . . . can't wait to see how ACP site will turn out.
This needs alot of help, but what about a simple layout like this http://www.autocarparts.com/newpage1.htm
I am thinking layout wise that might work but you should goto a more graphic driven approach such as simple graphic buttons with java or something else tied in so you can have multiple level menus.
