TypeS looks like a 4X4
TypeS looks like a 4X4
It really does and the more I look at my TypeS the more it looks so absolulty jacked up. I ponder as to why Aura did this. My ideas:
1) They put 17" wheels on it and did not take into consideration that they would jack the car way up
2) They kept it high to keep the "luxury" driving feel.
I have studied the TLs's stance while parked next to other cars and man, its ass end is way to high. I was thinking about Comptec springs, now I'm thinking they dont go far enough down... to even look like the TL should look. I may go with the Eibok's just to get it down.
I dont want my TL to have a slammed look, in fact, I want it to be at a perfect height for next years track circuit with the BMW club.

i think the comptech springs give the car just the right amount of drop. i think the H&R sport and race give too much drop, and from the pics i have seen with the comptech springs the wheels seems to fit in the well just right.
there is a maxima se next to me in the garage, and i think they look just as high as my TLS.

Re: 1) Wrong RE:2) Also wrong
Ride heights are usually dictated by Federally mandated minimum bumper alignments, and in providing adequate clearance for mud, ice, snow etc.
Ever looked at a late-model Mustang? One source I have at Ford said this WAS a mistake - that after being comitted to production they realized that the design was too low and they had to put it on tippy-toes. Even the SVT Cobras have too huge a gap.

You definitely want springs, I like my comptechs, but others may work fine too. Install wasn't as tough as I thought it would be either. The front went down about 1.5" and the back dropped a little over .75".

Wrong, your on crack, park next to another can and compare unless they are all illegal...
Road Rage is actually correct. There are standards as far as bumper heights for cars in the same class. Of course, the bumper on a Toyota MR-s is not going to match up with a Lincoln Navigator, but there are certain guidlines that the manufacturers are required to follow.
Maybe someone who is involved in the auto business (at least in the US) would know more than I.

No argument with that but the TLs does not derive its height from these guidlines or the Pontiac Grand Prix I was parked next to (same class) that my TLs's buttox stuck up 6 inches higher on would be very illegal.
BTW -- the car does sit lower with two people in it

Headlamps on Motor Vehicles
VC 24400. During darkness, every motor vehicle other than a motorcycle, shall be equipped with at least two lighted headlamps, with at least one on each side of the front of the vehicle, and, except as to vehicles registered prior to January 1, 1930, they shall be located directly above or in advance of the front axle of the vehicle. The headlamps and every light source in any headlamp unit shall be located at a height of not more than 54 inches nor less than 22 inches.
If you look a little to low, the officer will measure the height from the headlamp to the ground. If it is lower than 22 inches, your car is TOO LOW and its time for a fix-it ticket.
They just had an article on "staying" compliant in the latest SCC magazine. There were some people that were surprised about there cars not meeting spec (and the cars didn't look slammed)!
I believe there are some other regs, but am not sure if they are still enforced.
The lighting wasn't good, and I wish I could of had a tape measure to indicate heights, but my workout partner didn't show up (that's the gum in the background). But, here are some with H&R Sports:
My new 18" wheels will be in from Les Shwab late next week, I'll be having a set of the Ebochs installed at the same time with controller arms. I'm having them look for more race build arms now.
y2ks2k, what part of Vancouver are you in? I'm in Cascade Park. After you get your wheels and springs, mind if we hook up somewhere so I can check them out?
I wish more people around here were into getting a meet together...

I like the H&R Sports drop much better than Comptech's actually.
There have been several occassions where I've been very thankful for the clearance on my TLS. I don't know if I want to lower the car at all. Maybe I'll put on the OEM body kit to make it appear a little closer to the ground and still maintain clearance for the real guts under the car.

The silver looks good with the kit, Dave. What about the wheel gap? Do you mind it? That and the soft suspension are why I got the H&R's. Not one scrape, yet, and I have found a coupe mountains (stupid speed bumbs that a Land Cruiser would have a hard time with), and entrances to drives that are anything but level (you can see where other people have scraped).
y2k whatever:
I am on crack? Is that how you express disagreement based on your scientific examinations of Grand Prix heights? yIKES.
Well, I may be going slow but I am ahead of you...
you might want to check out things you do not know before you pop off.

Heights for passenger cars are affected by:
1) NHTSA regs for height and collision capability
2) Clearance of wheel wheel and others parts during ice/mud, etc.
3) Headlight height regs

Just when we(some of us anyway)all thought our TLS looks like 4x4... I was parked next to a 2001 VW Golf GTi fully loaded with Sport Package(17" rims and sport suspension), oh boy!!! The wheel gap is at least 3/4" wider than stock TLS!!!!
