Tranny Slipping?

can someone clarify exactly what happens when your tranny slips? I see so many ppl with messed up trannies saying how it slips?

does this mean it misses a gear? or does it gear up very rough?

any thoughts are appreciated.

thanks

I think it will be different with different TL's: some will shift harshly, and others (like mine) slip as though the clutch petal on a standard transmission wasn't fully engaged so the RPM's come up but it isn't getting 100% to the drive wheels. It definitely lets you know something is amiss, though!

okay so basically it feels like you shifted the car into neutral causing the RPM's to shoot up to around 6000RPM, and then the car catches the gear and you feel a huge jolt forward?

that sounds about right...hopefully mine doesn't have that...

It doesn't shoot that high on tach, but yes it grabs funny and it is NOT smooth.

I think that by the time the transmission is slipping, people may not have been tuned into previous warnig signs. I chraterize the funny grabing as chatter as the friction dics/cluches have been overheated and do not engage smoothly. But by that time the trans fliud will be burnt, in color and by smell. At times when cold and at full throttle the trans will shift rather hard. This is the begining of the end. Continued operation will lead to slipping and the dangerous lock up that some have experienced. I believe the lock up is caused possibly by the third gear cluch set coming apart and the getting jamed. This would mean the trans is stuck in third gear. Then when it shift into another gear the trans locks up, if two gears are engaged at one time it locks the trans. Like someone locked up the front wheels. I did notice that there was at times some event that felt like a shift. As you dirve along at a constant speed it shift a gear or the torque converter locks. But, that is not realy what happens. I believe it migh be caused by a partial blockage of the shifter solinoids or smaller passages of the valve body that temporarily are blocked or some burnt clutch material just passes through. I would suggest thatyou have it checked out at your soonest convenience.

Actually, I am pretty tuned in to the feel of the transmission--this started about a week ago, and after 3-4 times I realized this was not a mis-shift but a genuine problem. I am hoping it will hold out til Acura sees it (a week from Tuesday). If not, I will call the hot-line and get towed. One thing is for sure, I'm not taking any long trips or travelling over 50!

2003 3.2 tl !

I have a 2003 3.2 tl ... 6 months old...... This car almost killed me due to transmission locking up ....driving 60 miles an hour and the transmission locks! Bout threw me threw the winsheild 6 times ..my tires actually had marks when they replaced my transmission ..THEY GAVE me NEW tires only needed the two front ,but they threw the two back ones on for free ..

I swear the car gave me whiplash and it is a miracle the csr didn't flip ...the service guy who drove it to see if there was REALLY a problem said he'd never seen anything like it ,but he stated it bout put him through the windsheild going only 30 mph!

And ACura says' they are clueless to these transmission problems and it's the forst time they saw a car do what mine did ...

Mine is on its way, and I am really hoping mine will make it to next week when I get mine into the dealer's service department--if they test-drive it and tell me they found nothing wrong, the sh!t will hit the fan. . .

Let me tell you something..

DRIVE with extreme caution ..you will sometimes get no warning!

I didn't have a clue ,my car just started locking up ..and I mean seriously ..the tires would actually skid and make noise ... going slow or fast it's unbeleiveably dangerous... like I said my neck is very injured and don't know what to do about this ..my transmission was replaced and I felt pretty good about that ,but after finding this forum today and other forums' where this has happened several times not just once scares me even moreso then I was before... I have never been so scared while driving ,it's like you have no clue when your car is going to try to come to a dead stop out of the blue and practically throw you threw the windsheild ..there was a guy here or another forum austin519 ...saying to contact him ,but I can't find his email address now ,if he sees this I hope he emails me!

Best of luck with your car!
