tranny help

ok so my tranny finally took a dump on me...i called the dealer and described the symptoms to them and they said it sounded like the tranny is going out...he then checked his records because i get my service done there and he told me that my car isnt covered under any warranties (i have a 03 type s with 73,000miles)...i called acura's customer care number and they said the same thing...so now i'm wondering if you guys can give me advice on who else i can call to get this covered or where i can find a cheaper tranny because the dealership wants 4000 for one. thanks

As fsttyms1 wrote, spend some time and read the "Tranny Failure Thread":
https://acurazine.com/forums/wash-wax-23/leather-conditioner-help-106818/

As orgnlprankster7 mentioned, some 2003 TLs are covered by the 109,000 mile warranty and some aren't. Whether or not they're covered depends on the car's VIN number. Acura apparently thought they fixed the reliability problem at some point during the 2003 model year production run. Most here feel that they didn't until some design changes were made in February of 2005.

But if you read that thread you find many reports of non-covered 2003 TLs receiving some or all of the transmission replacement costs covered as a "goodwill" gesture. There's no guarantee that your particular car will be offered goodwill coverage but reading how other TL owners made their requests might help your case.

Good luck!

Acura didnt think they had the prob solved- there was a court case and they had to pick a VIN number to stop at so they did!

Generally- bypass the COMMISSION BASED SERVICE WRITER and speak directly with the Service MANAGER who can and will call his District Rep who says YES! goodwill him~
based on mileage and age and close enough on the VIN
Point out you are a loyal cutstomer of their service dept and have paid for normal services in the past

A little courtesy and persistance will pay off in this matter
Mentioning you belong to acurazine- the largest online community of Acura owners, and the experience of our members says.....

Good Luck

so i talked to the service manager and all he told me was that they're just a "repair" shop and can't do anything so call acura's customer care...so i did that they to said they can't and won't do anything because I do all major services at home( i rather do it myself and save tons of money)...so if anyone knows where i can get a used tranny in california that would be awesome

If they are an Acura Dealership, thats who does the replacement unit ordering and install
You just need to go up the food chain of Acura, so ask the Service Manager for the name and number of the District Warranty Rep, and write a letter on paper to Customer Care as well as another call to them opening a claim
Describe nicely how much brand loyalty you have and how disappointed you are in this dealer for giving you the total bums rush~
As long as you did service the car- they dealer cannot refuse you service
We will help- you are no where near the buy a trans stage- if anything- you will pay acura a little and get a good new design trans that works from them!
dont sweat even if you get a rental its cheaper than buying a unit 2500 unknown condition- same to rebuild yours

And keep your cool. Blowing your top will get you NO WHERE. Be nice and Also slip in there that doing maintenance at home has no bearing on why this trans has failed, nor should it reflect not being covered. Politely let them know that you are a member of the largest acura forum and tht you are well aware of the transmission problem and that you know even that the select vin-range of 03s are still very problematic.

You might want to ask the Customer Care group how any servicing that you've done at home would cause the transmission to fail at 73,000 miles.

Personally, I'd hesitate to put a used transmission in a second generation TL since they've had such reliability problems. Used transmission always involve a bit of a gamble and a buying a used transmission with known reliability problems could be asking for trouble.

One benefit of getting a rebuilt one through Acura is that it will have all the latest design improvements. This would include the changes made in February of 2005 that may have resolved the major reliability issues.

I'd try calling the Customer Care group again with some of the tips that fsstyms1 and 01tl4tl have suggested.

I'd try a different dealer. Just bring it in and let them diagnose it. Hopefully the dealer will ask Acura for goodwill consideration.

funny thing is i asked the claims manager to look up when i was suppose to do service on my transmission like the owners manuel said(i already knew the answer) and he said at 120,000miles or 6 years, which i then told him i'm even close to that maintence interval yet. but he didnt care he said it helps builds your case to get "goldwill" with us if you have all your work done at acura.
