Tranny #3

Well it happened today. I have been babying this tranny since getting it and it still went. Today i was cruising at about 60mph when all of a sudden the tranny downshifted itself. I didnt step on the gas, it just downshifted. I let go of the gas and the car kept the gear and slowed down, when i put it in SS i saw that the car was in second gear. i was amazed. I upshifted and was able to get back into 4th. Then when i gunned it to see if it did the same thing again, it hesitated for a second, went into 3rd then 2nd instead of doing the 4-2 shift. This is the 3rd one down. I think i'm through. 1 tranny I can tolerate, 2 trannies i stick around because i love the car, 3 is all i can take, i will get the car back, drive it and get the g35 coupe, or step up to something else. I wont buy an Acura until i see that the next gen line ups dont have the same problems. Funny part is, when i was waiting for my ride a salesman comes to me and asks me if i was interested in the TL-S. I said hell no, i have a 99 in service getting its 3rd tranny replaced, i will never buy another Acura. He was like wow, that's rare. Whatever, i am so pissed. I hate to bash the car. I mean i love the thing and i pray that you guys who havent gotten any problems dont get them, but you have to admit. Enough is enough. 3 dead trannies? 1 person can only take so much before they give up on the car. I have nothing bad to say about Acura or the TL other than get these tranny problems resolved. They just lost me as a customer for my next car(not forever) and i am sure that many others feel the same.

Damn Mario, sorry to hear about that $hit. Can you apply for a lemon law since this is your 3rd tranny?

I am getting paranoid now with a few 99s with tranny problems.

Your rides a '99? Damn I hadn't heard anyone who had to replace their tranny that many times for the '99s. I thought the majority of the trouble was with the '00 and higher. That sucks. My tranny sucks to begin with but I haven't had any significant problems.

The '00 tranny is a 5spd and the '99 is a 4spd. There are differences in the way they were designed (clutch pack/planetary-sun-ring ratios), so the coincidental ratio of 99's to 00-03's is less. It still sux though.

Sorry to hear about your third failure. I have had two failures as well and can understand your frustrations...

To answer your question, the problem with '99 tranny is due to weak bearings. For '00+ tranny, it is due to 3rd gear clutch pack. I have a '99 TL, and so far no problems.
