tranny 100,000 miles or 7 yrs

i just bought a 2002 tls and i was wondering if the tranny will be replaced by acura free of charge? the car has 90,000 miles. Dont it say it covers up to 100,000 miles or 7yrs? which is it 7yrs or 100,000 miles? also how do i know if the tranny is failing?

welcome to the forum

please read the main `tranny failure` thread for details of symptoms
the extended warranty on normal cars..non salvage title cars.. is 7 years+9months or 109kmiles whichever is first
call acura care and register as owner, they can tell you date car first sold and last date of warranty 1-800-382-2238x5

the general signs of failure are burnt fluid smell on dipstick, slipping into 2nd and 3rd and/or D5 light blinking on hard throttle like getting on freeway

If the `Recall` for external oil jet kit has not been done, acura does a boroscope inspection of the trans for heat damage and if ok -installs the kit.
If not ok they replace trans under warranty,,,thats ONLY if certain damage is present

If mileage or age is up, you're not covered. 109k miles or 7 years 9 months. Mileage might be up to ~113k depending on your VIN.

The only other way to get a free tranny from Acura is if they "goodwill" the cost of a new trans 100%, which some people have gotten, some didn't, and some only got a portion of 100% goodwilled.

So i take it since the cars has over 7 years on it that acura WILL NOT replace the tranny, damm well that sucks. Its a shame they put such shitty transmissions in these cars when its the top selling car in there lin-up. I always wanted one of these cars!

there is a thing called Goodwill Warranty where acura can grant partial to full coverage to out of limit cars
All depends on your cicumstance and charm

some cars go 150 with no trans issues at all, others may have been replaced under warranty already
Look under the car at trans main bolt heads, painted blue means acura rebuilt unit,,

its 7 years PLUS 9 months from first date sold, some cars are sold late in the year!!
call acura 800 for that info

some VINS have fast reading odometer (court case) and get warranty to 114.5 indicated miles

I have no idea if they changed the tranny already. I'm gonna check when I get home. How can I tell if the oil cooler has been installed? I should have looked at the reviews before getting into this, I bought it cause it's a Honda and I owned hondas all my life and NEVER had a problem major yet. I own a 07 accord coupe not one single problem and had an rsx s free of maintance, plus plenty of hatches a few gsr's and have been preaching hondas for years.

yeah- the honda line is great and they went over ~technologied~ on the acura line

Its not an oil cooler, its a hose from the side of the trans to the top center of it moving oil to a needed place-
you can see it looking at the trans with hood open, a funky thing with a 10mm head bolt on the mounting flange, with a hose to it
or there will be a large (19mm) bolt head with ATF stamped on it

call acura 1-800-238-3382-x5 register as new owner, ck recall done for oil jet kit
ask for warranty history- was trans ever replaced, and any current extended warranty like SRS or seatbelts

there is a new recall for airbag problem thats a growing list- that 800 number is the division that sends out the notices for recall
also register on acura.com and access your cars records straight from their system

As mentioned above the 7 year 9 month limit on the transmission warranty is measured from the date the car was originally sold. Acura can provide you with that date if you can't find it.

And, even if it's not covered, Acura has offered goodwill coverage to many. It doesn't hurt to see what they might offer you.

Read the last 10 or 20 pages of the Tranny Failure Thread for more details and strategies on how to request goodwill coverage:

note: kriz does not state any failure symptoms, appears to want a free transmission on an 8 year old car he just bought,,, based on a different divisions reputation~

acura designed this model some 10-15 years ago!! things have changed since then and you cant blame them now for the past. gen3 has way worse problems that we do, including trans failure!!

every good car buyer does an internet search for car type+ problems
Thats how I found azine~ TL+ problems and straight to the tranny failure thread it took me. Luckily I found one with a failing trans and under warranty- sweet~

call acura to know when it was warranty replaced- if done after mid 2005 you probably have a very reliable transmission that will last you no sweat

DO get on a 3 qt trans fluid change program once a year to prevent problems later
Congrats on the score- a TL with a replaced trans is a deal!!

next thing to consider is the timing belt- was it done at 105?- dealer have any service records on the car?

ok since you seem to know a lot of the answers on this forum. If my tranny does fail could i use a 05 an up tranny? didnt they fix the problem in 05? i could get one from a junk yard or online for about 1000 bucks then pay 500 for the install. im gonna call acura on monday to see when the tranny was replaced. oh ya the car has 90k on it...

To be clear you would want a 2000-2003 transmission that was rebuilt after February 2005. That when Acura made some improvements that appear to have fixed or at least reduced the major reliability issues. You can't install an automatic transmission from a 2005 TL as it's not compatible with the 2nd gen TLs. (If that's what you were thinking.)

04 05 carried gen2 problems with it
the redesign of the case in 05 has helped a lot

you mean beside having our trans problems in the 04-05, several recalls, a tendancy to easily overrev with manual trans and blow the motor..the clutch on the MT cars..
.
Go read their threads for more ideas of what goes wrong--rattles etc

yup that tranny has an oil jet line installed. So does this mean my transmission was replaced before 2005? also i called the number you gave me to registered the car but they told me they dont carry service records, that i needed to call the dealer who performed the maintance...thats mission impossiable lol

yes- a pre 3/05 trans is what you have installed

the 800- people can only tell you what recall or warranty work has been done, as well as what cities the car was reported living in to them -owner reg with acura 800

you can call local dealers from there but dont expect much- very little is required before 100k on the TL
oil changes and basic fluid services, lube stuff every year
