TL to Dealership. Replace Dash!!

This morning my girlfriend is taking the TL back to the dealership to have the dash and right rear door panel replaced. I'm kinda scared to get it back. I think that I've replaced more dashes than they have. It's not fun. I've been told that it takes about a week for the whole job. But it's under warranty. And we get a loaner.

Has anybody else had their dash replaced for the notorious shrinking problem? Please give me some insight on how it went. What to expect.

-Thanks, Travis.

What was the initial problem to have them replace the dash? I thought mine looks funny but hadn't thought about it until now.

If I look out at the windshield, the portion near the defrost vents has a ripple effect. High, low, high, low gradient as you move from the left to right of the car. Should I make the dealer replace my dash too?

i had my dash replaced.

make sure they replace th thin vents where the dash meets the window, those warp as well... i know... mine are still warped because they used the original ones.

take a VERY close look at the passenger air bag cover... mine does NOT sit flush the way it used too... i am hoping they can fix this with a new air bag cover.

check the passenger side air vents to make sure they are even.

check the whole center console and make sure nothing looks uneven or that there arent any gaps that werent there before.

check to make sure the glove box is sitting correctly, that the gap on one side isnt bigger than the other one.

good luck. mine took 2 weeks because SUPPOSEDLY the one they ordered had some broken clip or something so they had to order another one.

oh, and the best way to go about it, would be to have them order the dash and once they recieve it, take the car to them.

What was the issue that you were having to warrant the dash replacement?

They said it would take a few days. We're not in any hurry. They gave us a Jag X-Type as a loaner. Pretty good experience so far. I hope the surgery turns out well. If not, I have the means to refit things as needed. I should have taken pics to post. The wavey dash thing is pretty noticable. Looks horrible!!

BUT... It's covered under warranty!!

I always wanted to beat up a Jag anywho...

Wink

My car is at the dealer now getting the dash replaced! Of course they didn't have one in stock, so they're going to overnight it. In the mean time, I got an 05 TL to play with....

Uncald4, how did your replacement go? Did everything look alright afterwards? I can't wait to get a straight dash. I've been staring at this warped one for a year now and didn't even know it wasn't normal! Thanks! I guess they replace quite a few of them. It didn't even phase the service rep when I mentioned it... 10 mins later, he told me I would get a new dash.

So, if anyone has a wavy dash where it meets the windshield, bring it in and have it replaced!

Dood, that's EXACTLY what mine looked like! That is definitely covered under warranty. If it's your dad's car, I would definitely have him take it in and get a loaner. Otherwise they may just deny there was anything wrong.

Holy $hit!!!! I have an '03 TLP and mine has been warped for some time now and beginning this winter I have begun to see the yellow foam! I didn't even think of getting this replaced under warranty!

I'll have to add that to the window trim tape problem.

Good thing I came across this thread!

*Question: They do replace it with a NEW OEM dash, correct?

my car is under my moms name and they did it for me. so yes, they will do it. the only thing you would need your dad for is to get a rental.

also, to reduce the down time on your car, have them order the dash first and then take your car once it arrives.

i have to make an appointment to have them check it out first, correct?

what do you need to show them, for them to do warranty work? title, or what..

also, if i make an appointment for them to check what's wrong, should i bring my dad with me to get a loaner and would they care if they know I will be driving the loaner?

and how long did it take to put in when the Dash ARRIVED.

sorry, this is all new to me. thanks.

just show up to the dealer and have one of the service advisors take a look at it. he will then probably put in an order for it. even if he/she says they will call you when the dash arrives, call them every few days to check. you dont need to take any paperwork with you.

for the loaner, just have your dad go get it. im not sure but i dont think you are supposed to drive it. if anything, switch cars with your dad or just be very careful driving the loaner.

prepare to be without the car for about a week... maybe more, maybe less.

Still waiting for the dash to come in. Backordered they say. They replaced the right rear door panel though. And did some brake pad and rotor replacement. I think that they know the brakes are a problem. Like on the CL. Will keep you posted.

So what is actually causing the dash to warp? My 99 is fine, and it seems like most of you are 02+... did they change something?

I took mine in because my pass. side airbag was warped as well. They did not replace the dash on mine since that was the only thing really out of adjustment. They did order a new pass. airbag under warranty though and put that in. It still isn't perfect but its better than it was before. When they put my dash back together though, they did leave a little gap above the center air vent; I'm going to just live with it. I'm sure I could get one of the guys at work to fix it again, but I'm not too worried about it--only bad enough for me to notice just because I know it's there.

Back ordered eh?

I think they're giving you the runaround... I just got mine sent by overnight shipping 2 days ago. They're in the process of installing it now. I saw the entire dash all taken apart earlier tonight and all the parts were laying on the roof. What a sad sight that was....

I hope they put everything back alright.

We just replaced our 99 Accord with an 02 TL still under warranty. The Bose is jammed, the dash has this problem, and one of the Bose speakers is buzzing.

All this covered under warranty?

Edit: the rotors are ever so slightly warped, but at 36,000 miles I'm sure they'll tell me that this is normal wear and tear.

The rotors are covered. They know that the Accord, Inspire, TL have brake rotor problems.

Dealership finally got the dash in. I think that we will wait until after the Seattle meet next week to have it repaced. I don't mind waiting. The dealership has been pretty cool about the whole thing. I think they feel bad about our experience with the CL we traded in. It's been 2 months and the Red 3.0CL is still on their lot. What a piece!

When we take a car apart at our shop we usually put the big panels on the roof also. But use a fleece blanket to set them on. I wouldn't worry about it.

Wow- There are too many 18 year olds running around in these TLs that are only a year or two old! My first car cost me $1200 of hard earned lawn cutting money 20 years ago. And that was a 10yr old piece of crap Ford. I suppose Mom and Dad pay for the mods and the insurance too
Sorry nothing to do with the post,,just had to say it though

im guessing that was directed towards me... my first car was actually a $1000 Chrysler Cirrus... though i guess that has no relevance..
yes, my dad paid for the car and yes he pays for the insurance... though i pay for my own mods as he doesnt approve of them...
im sorry my dad wants me to have nice things..
he might get me a G35 or m3 next

UPDATE on the Dash Replace!!

I took them 3 days longer than they told us originally. We missed the Seattle Acura Meet. Went to pick it up..... The clock light was out. They pulled it back in and fixed the light. When we got it back.... The dash was scratched and had horrible pry marks around the TSA and CRUISE buttons. I'm PISSED. Here's a pic...

Kinda blurry. But you get the idea.

3 days LONGER?? Damn dood.... How many days total did it take? Mine took 3 days total, and that included a day for them to overnight the dash. Not sure what your best course of action for those unsightly pry marks though....

The only complaint I have is the pass airbag cover no longer matches the dash color and it sticks up a little. Also the nav screen was crooked when they first put it in, but fixed it the next day. I think I'll live w/ the airbag issue rather than risk them damaging something else while replacing that too...

Good luck w/ those pry marks, maybe they'll order bezel for you? Some interior trim pieces are actually pretty cheap, so ask your parts department for a price, it might just be worth replacing yourself.

Damn 3 days!! That's amazing. They assured us that it was impossible to complete the dash replacement in less than 5 days. They ordered the dash weeks before the actual replacement. Sounds like we got HOSED!!

I think I'm done with this dealership. Our Salesperson is awesome.... but the rest of the dip-shits are horrible. Bad move on their part. We go in on Wednesday to see if we can "RESOLVE" the issues. If not, ACURAZINE is gonna reek of dead dealership.

p.s. The trunk doesn't open at all.

You ought to make sure your salesman is involved in this discussion with the Service Department.
