Tapping Noise - A/C related?

There is a new noise tapping, thumping, what ever you want to call it, on the passenger side floorboard against the console. You can feel this thump and its when you first start the car. Determined that when I turn off the HVAC all together it goes away. When I put climate control up to 90 it goes aways. Below 70 it comes back whether AC is on or not and changes somewhat with fan control. Any ideas? It is tapping against the plastic on the floor/beside the console and I can feel it. Ideas>???????????

Yes, I know what you're talking about. It's been happening to me for a while now...it bugged the hell out of me until I figured it out (sorta). The tapping is constant, usually for a few minutes and sometimes indefinitely, right? I am pretty sure it has something to do with the opening/closing of the AC flaps that either let air in, or recirculate it. Next time this happens try pushing the "recirculate" button - for me it almost always makes the noise go away (at least temporarily) What I think has happened is that the mechanism is broken and it's trying to either open or close and it can't - it keeps slipping and trying to open/close. Pretty annoying....but I can't even justify bringing to the shop and getting a quote on this, since it's not affecting performance. And it'll probably be pretty expensive. If you figure out exactly what it is (or what they call it) let me know!!
