Question SS advice please?

Ok,
I have a few questions about the SS because i've never driven stick so i'm kinda new to this whole having control of the gears thing.
1. When slowing down for a red light do we need to manually down shift each gear? I know it does it automatically for you but is it better to do it yourself?
2. When you do switch gears do you have to take your foot off the gas like in a real stick. It seems like the transition is smoother if you keep your foot on the gas.
3. When taking a turn are you suppoesd to down shift?
4. is it bad for the engine to be in a high gear (low r.p.m.)at too low of speed? I mean is it making the engine work too hard? this would be the opposite of revving too hard so is it o.k.?
5. at what r.p.m. is good to shift?

Anyways, I just need advice and tips on how to use the SS cuz i don't feel comfortbale with it yet. can anyone help? thanks guys

1. When slowing down for a red light do we need to manually down shift each gear? I know it does it automatically for you but is it better to do it yourself?

Depends on a couple things. You don't have to downshift if you're coming to a complete stop. The car will downshift to first if you stop the car. If only slowing down and are going to speed up again, then you'd want to downshift or you'll have almost no power because you'll still be in 3rd, 4th or 5th. Also depends if you want to engine brake (not the greatest thing for the car). That's letting the RPM's start high and run down slowing the car down.

2. When you do switch gears do you have to take your foot off the gas like in a real stick. It seems like the transition is smoother if you keep your foot on the gas.

No, you can up and downshift while still on the gas. It's clutchless.

3. When taking a turn are you suppoesd to down shift?

You do not have to downshift. It depends if you want the car to have power coming out of the turn or not. If you drive slow, then you probably won't need to downshift. Depends on your style. The car will not downshift it self to anything but first and that's only if stopped or in 2nd gear and you floor it. (00/01 models only)

4. is it bad for the engine to be in a high gear (low r.p.m.)at too low of speed? I mean is it making the engine work too hard? this would be the opposite of revving too hard so is it o.k.?

I don't believe that's bad. You just won't be going anywhere very fast. The car will not allow you to upshift if you are not going fast enough. It is impossible to shift into like 3rd or 4th if you are going, say 10 mph. The only time you could be going to slow is if you slow down from like 60 to 20 and don't downshift. You'll know that you have to downshift at that point.

5. at what r.p.m. is good to shift?

Again, it depends on your driving style. If you drive fast and like the power, then you'll want to shift high, 5-6k rpms. I believe 5500rpms is where almost all of the power kicks in. If you drive like slow, then you will shift lower, around 3k-3500 rpms. Try this. When driving how you normally drive, turn the radio off and just listen to the engine and watch your rpm's. You can hear where the engine shifts. That's a good basis to go by.

Whew! I'm tired now. Tough day at work here... I think I need a break now.

If im not mistaken I will be correcting Acura3200 on one subject, I heard that MODERATE engine breaking, keyword here being "moderate," is actually good for the car, and some manufacturers recommended moderate engine breaking during the car's break in period....Correct me if im wrong....

Adamyankee:

Remove the toilet seat entirely when you are not using it. This will hopefully teach her a lesson. It will worth the extra 3 minutes it takes to reinstall it every time.

No, don't downshift. Even in a manual. Let your brakes slow you down, not your tranny.

I don't. It's not necessary.

3. When taking a turn are you suppoesd to down shift?
Someone with racing experience may correct me, but I think the right time to downshift is when accelerating out of the turn.

4. is it bad for the engine to be in a high gear (low r.p.m.)at too low of speed? I mean is it making the engine work too hard? this would be the opposite of revving too hard so is it o.k.?
It would be bad but your TL has a limiter that keeps your engine from getting hurt. If you use sportshift enough you'll hit it someday. It causes your engine to start cutting out.

Well, they pretty much said it all... But just to add one more point.

When taking a turn, you should finish the downshift BEFORE entering the curve. You can just control the car by the gad pedal. When you feel that you are going a bit too fast, you can just lift your feet and engine brake. And you can WOT after the apex... I am sure someone can come up with a even better explaination... but just my $0.02 for now...

the shifter and auto together are the best combo ever. sometimes i wish for the full manual, but then realize that i would be complaining alot more when im tired. use the ss and listen to your car. she'll tell you all her secrets...

Here's my take on engine braking: don't do it! What's less expensive to fix - engine and transmission, or brake pads?!?
