Unhappy Is something wrong with my car?

Last night I was out with a few friends in our usual cruise around the city to smoke the ricers in town when I nearly got beat 3 times! First, this Grand Am with a body kit and blacklights tried to pass me on a double yellow after leaving a stoplight. I punched it from 5-85 and we were dead even till about 65 and I was only 1 car-length ahead then. I tried to just tell myself he had some engine mods, but then a guy in a brand new Tahoe floors it from a stoplight and I don't overtake him till about 60! My friend riding with me even said that my car felt slower tonight. Then I got a really riced up 2001 Celica GT to race me from a stoplight and he got a slight jump and I barely walked past him. By 85 I was only half a car length ahead. Now I'm like WTF? I knew I would have trouble with a Celica GTS but a GT should be no problem. The only thing I can think of that has slowed down my car is that I have driven it very hard since break-in till the 27k that's on it now. I have been driving 90 mile oneway trips everyday this past week going at least 120 to 147 almost constantly. I think I might need to get a new air filter. If anyone else is having similar performance losses please help

Thanks,
Daniel

well.. I don't know about you .. but MY tl tends to bog down when I have a "few friends" in it with me. it feels "orders" more powerful and handles way better when I'm alone with it. guess the girl just likes to please me and me alone

How heavy was your friend and/or how many other friends were riding in your car???

Remember, weight is a very important factor when it comes to racing.

It wasn't a weight issue I don't think because I only had one other guy with me and we are both around 160lbs.

Your performance doesn't surprise me. Obviously the additional weight reduced your chances of "smoking" those cars. Second, you underestimated all the cars you've raced due to knowing you have 260HP. One thing you should keep in mind is, that the Tahoes have sh!t load of torque so you will not beat if off the line, but strange that it took you to hit 60 to pass, the Grand Ams are not as big of a joke as most here think, and the new Celicas have better gearing than your cars thus allowing them to keep up with us, the GTS would beat us on the high end as I've seen it done to a CLS.

#1 Horsepower is not everything. Just because your car has 260HP doesn't mean you'll "smoke rice cars" with less than 200HP. Let me give you a real simple analogy. A motorcycle with 600cc will 99.99% times smoke our TLs no matter how many mods you got.

#2 How heavy are your 18" rims? Rims adds looks, but it can also add weight

#3 I wouldn't say your car has "performance loss" but don't expect a TL-S to beat some of these rice cars by like 5 car lenghts or something. Just understand our cars have limits and is not designed to smoke cars like a Porche 9-11 Turbo. TLs are afterall a sudan nonetheless.

No disrespect, just want to shed some light on this. I love my TL, but I'm not going to blow smoke in your a$$.

ymckoon:

The three cars I raced were not 911 Turbo's. I should have no problem beating them by at least 1-2 car lengths - especially the Tahoe. And no I put in 93 octane.:p

Make sure your actuator is working well otherwise you'll loose about 30 hp right there. If you dont know how to check it, do a search, you'll find it.

A type S with headers? You should be movin pretty quick. Chrome 18s don't help. Sounds like your actuator is dead.

Check it out it's really easy to see.

i don't know whats wrong wit your car
but you usage of words (e.g.RICE) has got to go

I would expect to see that word on a ford/chevy site but not
on a TL (japanese designed) site.

They way I always hear "rice" used is to describe guys who pretend like they got something special when all they've really done is something gay like just throw on some stickers.....i.e. some guy with a red Integra w/ hubs that has a Type R sticker on the back.....or a guy who throws on an M3 sticker on a 4-door BMW 3-series.

The term "rice or rice burners" has changed into multiple means as import racing became bigger and bigger... it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see its original meaning/reference...

the reason all the red necks originated this term was b/c they needed something to classify all the imports that started to show up at there local hometown race track...

i could go on but i just wanted to politically set the record straight

so good to hear your car is better easy2speed... funny how everyone got technical on the problem when it was something stupid.... hahah
