yes you must remove that small piece- you are still limiting the inlet air
When done, there are 2 large holes in the bottem of the air filter box that are the fully open inlets!
If you have fake fog light holes like the 01, cut driver side open for more air!!
a K&N filter will flow much more air and the engine likes that

when you get into vtec- above 4700rpm to redline is when a low deep noise turns into a throaty roar and the car goes zoom zoom,,thats when you can tell the differance

its also no prob on smog test- passes Ca so it passes anywhere

That mod alone sounds better than my newly installed CT Ice Box. Sure, there's a slight gain but but for the price and notion of "cold air," the sound is pretty weak. But I guess I don't have to worry about sucking up water!

Getting tube.

It's been over a year ago I removed mine, but IIRC, if you just yank, pull, push, etc hard enough, the piece will bend and flex enough to get it out.

iirc I used channel lock pliers and yanked

to me- the advantage of this over a long snout cai is the water protection-
the lower plastic panel has cutouts for water to leave thru!

just sit down facing the car and rip it out. there's some rubber piece (IIRC) that was holding mine in and it just tore apart when i pulled hard enough

There is no point in removing the resonator box

This has been driving me crazy as there appear to be so many misinformed people on this forum. I can only speak for the 2002 type-S, but removal of the resonator box and addition of a cold air intake does nothing. The type-S resonator box is already designed and mounted in such a way so as to be its own cold air intake.

Thus, removing the resonator box leaves you with a need to add a cold air intake because now you are getting air into the intake manifold from a place that is closer to the engine -- the hot engine. In essence, removing the resonator box removes your cold air intake.

You will see no power gains by doing this. The only thing you will really see is more of a roaring sound when you open her up. For some people, that is all they need or want from this mod.

The replacement of your air filter with a K&N, however, will improve air flow into the manifold. That is money worth spending as maintaining optimal air intake on the type-S is critical to its performance.

the resonator box is more accurately described as the restrictor box
Removing it gives unfettered access for air to reach the actual air filter box

a short ram cai would not do much for you as it routes air from the engine area thru a pipe sitting in that same heated area-
but removing the restictor box gets outside air- and having those cubic feet of air now able to be stored in the fenderwell for immediate draw is where the advantage comes in

dyno test show more air is a good thing

Bluegus- check ur intake out again. Take off the bulk head plastic cover and u will see the snorkle for the intake. It takes air in from the engine bay. Removing the box will draw cold air from behind the bumper and fender. Do some work to ur car before u misinform ppl.

my typeS with no resonator and an K&N sounds awesome when you give it some gas. its not obnoxious at all. after a while i did notice better highway mileage. maybe my car is more broken in but i average 30mpg on all highway trips and i have no other engine mods.
