Rebuilt transmissions

My original trans went out at about 130k so I had a used one put in that had about 40k and we have put about 40k more on that one. It is now going out. I want to fix it right this time. I have called 3 different places and this is what I have heard:

ATK:
$3500 (includes shipping)
$800 core
3year / 75k warranty
This sounds like a stock rebuild

Dr. Evil (Roadmaster)
$1700
$750 core
$260 round trip shipping
Need to ask about warrenty
This sounds like a stock rebuild

Level Ten
$3298
$600 round trip shipping
6month/6k warranty
With this I would have my trans removed, shipped to them, rebuilt, shipped back and reinstalled. So there is no core charge.
They say they have identified that problems with the transmissions and fix them. There should be a small gas mileage and performance increase .

I just wanted to here some opinions and experiences to help me make the right choice. I do not want to go through this again.

Might as well just check with local trans rebuild places in your area. many will be the same price and you wont have to deal with shipping cores or any thing and incase there is warranty work needed it will be easier to get.

What year TL do you have? If you have a 2000-2003 TL with the 5-speed transmission you might consider having it rebuilt through an Acura dealership since you'll be sure to get the Feb 2005 design updates.

Read the "Dr. Evil" thread that is a sticky at the top. There have been some very unhappy buyers.

Sorry, I forgot to say it is a 1999. We had the car in the dealer and they were willing to replace the transmission for about $3800.

I see. The previous owner of my 1999 TL had a rebuilt transmission installed through a local Acura dealer for about $3,200. That came with a two year, unlimited mileage warranty.

The transmission was rebuilt in the sense that they re-used the housing. Every internal part was replaced. Note that some transmission shops only replace the "worn items". That can be fine but the price paid should reflect the lower pricefor new parts.

The dealers up here in Toronto that I know of just take the broken tranny out of the car and send it to a local tranny shop. I say screw the middle man and find a reputable tranny shop and let them do all the work. Thats what I did.
