Rear Mount + Tranny Mounts

Hey guys, I went to the dealership to buy 3 engine mounts. While there, I got a 30 point inspection. They told me my engine mounts AND my transmission mounts were broken.

I got home and changed my front and side. I got the 4 bolts on the rear mount out, but I couldn't get the bracket off. Also, following the DIY, I was looking for the tranny mounts to remove, but I couldn't find it.

I got really frustrated after hours, and gave up. So now, my drive is MUCH better, but it still jerks when shifting. I know it's most likely my transmission mounts.

Can someone help me locate the transmission mounts? I want to replace both transmission mounts, and my rear mount. Would replacing both transmission mounts be difficult?

If I just have the dealership do it, do you think the labor would overlap? Rear mount labor is $350. Transmission mount is ~$450. Is it the same labor? Would I be able to save if I got them both done at the same time?

Yea thanks man, but I already have seen that pic and the service manual pics when I did the HW before i started.

I know what it looks like, but I can't find it in the actual car. I looked everywhere to the driver's side of the rear mount, but I couldn't find it. Has anyone changed them before? I'm guessing the rear would be changeable, but I don't know about the front.

Look on the subframe on the drivers side.

They are on the side of the trans and connect to the sub frame. You have to remove the drivers side wheel and get to them thru the wheel well.

You might need to jack up the transmission (with care) a little bit to replace both mounts, You will need 14mm socket, an extension and a ratchet, there are 2 nuts and 2 bolts on each mount.

Hrm. If one has changed the side & front mounts before, how hard would you rate it to do the trans mount? I know mine are broken too, but I've never gotten around to changing 'em.
If that's all that is entailed, as described above, then I don't imagine it being too hard to do..?

Remove wheel...support trans with jack+block of wood. use 14mm socket+extension+ratchet. doesn't seem all that bad

Front and side mounts are pretty easy and straight forward to change out. The rear is a whole other story. For the rear mount you need to remove the bracket first which is held on by two 17mm and two 14mm bolts (i think), which are a very tight reach. once the bracket is removed then you can unbolt the rear mount from the sub frame and remove it. i changed mine last year, and was very hard reach because of the tight space, you need to lay down on top of the engine and reach behind. there is little room to get a socket back there near the rear exhaust, and very little room to remove the mount through too. good luck

I rate the front and side and rear a 2 out of 10. The trans mounts are a .5

I agree and I remember there's a cutout in the frame to get to some of the bolts. You know what I mean if you've ever changed them.

Wtffff, I failed the rear mount change, and I couldn't even FIND the trans mounts.

I used too many converters (1/2 > 3/4 > 3/8) so I had too much free play in my breaker bar. I'll buy a 1/2" 14mm and give it another shot.

I'm going to upload a pic of the transmission, and hopefully someone can circle the trans mount location in red.

Btw, rear mount labor @ dealer is ~$350, and trans mount total is ~$400. Don't know if they overlap.

.
Take your wheel off, look at the end of the trans. Look at the subframe. You will see the 2 of them supporting the end of the trans

OK, I'll just add to my old thread instead of making a new one.

My 3 engine mounts AND my 2 tranny mounts were completely destroyed.

I changed my front engine and side engine mounts in one day. About 6 months later, I changed the rear engine mount.

About 2 months later (yesterday), I changed both tranny mounts. They were ripped in half.

I still get a slight jerk when shifting. Do you guys think it's just my transmission, or do you think one of my mounts could have failed in this time? Any recommendations? Tranny fluid was changed about 20k ago, and still shifts fine.

When does it jerk? all the time, cold...

pop the hood, put the car in drive, hold the brake and give the car some gas. This will allow you to see if there is play in the motor.

Are you running older fluid type or DW1? Have you cleaned the screen on the transmission?

Z1 with uncleaned screens. I'll swap the fluid and clean the screens. It happens all the time, but it's only a little jerk. But still, it's not like new car smooth.

Yeah check the screen, its a pretty quick job. Do the mount test though to see if the motor moves and note if it lifts from the front or rear. My TL jerks too, but I think all my mounts are bad.

Be careful cleaning the screens. A few posts here claimed that it worked wonders, but there's a video on youtube where a mechanic bought a used TL and tried to to the same to smooth out the shifts. After cleaning the screens (same day) the tranny started slipping.

My tranny is slipping from 2nd to 3rd when cold (and even 1-2 a little now) and I was planning on cleaning the screens to try fixing it. After seeing the video, I'm worried that it would make it worse. Right now, it's still drivable and I'd like it to stay that way rather than risking making it worse.

Does a 2000 TL have these screens? If so, where are they located and how many are there?

I would take it off anyway and see if its clogged. Your transmission is going to die soon anyway, why not take a shot at cleaning it and possibly saving your car? If the correct amount of fluid is not flowing through it then its possibly contributing to the issue. Id swap the fluid and clean the screens and possibly prevent yourself from forking out a bunch of cash!

Yes, one, a couple bolts on the transmission near the ATF fill bolt area. Can't remember exactly what it looks like but if you hunt on here for a minute you'll find it.
