seals arent necessary, the tensioner there is NO way he would know how much life is left in it. Is it fine to keep using? Probably. BUT its very cheap insurance that it will last

IMO, the rear one, used with the hydrolic adjuster, may not need to be changed, but the front, I do recommend to change. When it is out, spin it with your hand to feel how smooth or sticky it is. From one thread here that shows how the adjuster falls apart, the way the bearing parts are pressed together is different than the rear one, I think. Even so, the front one is so easy to change. The rear one you have to remove the hydrolic adjuster, then compress it with a proper pin to reinstall, ect.

there is an idler pulley that just spins and a tensioner pulley that has to maintain a specific pressure on the belt as it wraps and flaps thru at high speed
To expect it to last another 100k is insane IMO
4 more years???
how long till the next 105 service with timing belt etc will occur... 7 years??
--so by his estimate and protocal- the engine will self destruct in 50k miles because the tech told you bs!?
Ask him if he will replace the entire engine at no charge to you when the part fails

To save 50 or 100 bucks is crazy In my opinion- the timing belt being all critical to the running of the engine and the labor installing new parts should be minimal

As a retired tech I have seen many bad things- yes you can go past 100 with the belt and pullies,, but once you replace them - do it right and do it all
Did he mention a valve adjustment?
What about new plugs?

The only way your car already had a new pulley in the timing belt loop was if its an 03 with tbelt pulley recall and owner had tensioner pulley replaced then
Or the tech meant the ac pulley tensioner was replaced before- that would be a normal failure and external to the timing belt job

the problem with some former dealer techs is they are trained to replace parts- not fix them~ thats generalized statement and not meant to piss on anybody here or anywhere
-just be aware of how the presenter is thinking,,they may be trying to save you money now without thinking of long term ownership
Most cars resell every 3-4 years so owner goes cheap where they can-while a TL owner hangs on to the car and wants excellent maitenance

Like: if a car goes 150,000 miles-the tensioner fails and belt breaks- damage to valves $2500 plus $1000 timing belt job and extra charge to remove shredded parts--only to find out the head gaskets are bad and heads warped from overheat that came with broken belt- guess what drives the water pump!!
thats plenty of miles for it to last and now you need a new car!!

Thats how the dealer thinks and exist-- sales dept gets cars on the road so service dept can make the real money back for the dealer

A well maintained TL will easily go 300k miles and still do track days and daily driver with extreme driving- thats our megamod fasttyms1,,still going strong albeit he got tired of the auto trans failures and installed CL_S motor and 6 speed,,he pulled the 200k mile TL engine apart and it was like new inside, barely broken in! would go another 100 for someone else no sweat

Im sure it was still good when he looked at it for rougness or leakage
With none happening its still goood yes- BUT the issue is how long will it last???
you cannot tell unless you had other cars come back in with the failure after you didnt install new parts at 100,,,oh yes these will go another 50

Some fail soon after--the pressure being released and reapplied does something to the parts..others may go another 50 k--
but again I ask--what if I plan on this car making it to the next timing belt job?

WHEN a tensioner or idler pully fails, the timing belt jumps- the cams open at the wrong time and valves contact pistons,,, smash goes several thousand dollars worth of parts

Even if you plan to sell in the next 50, the next person gets screwed when the part fails
What bad karma on you~

Going to 120 or 150 before change has occured BUT all the parts were replaced when the job was finally done

I know an integra belt that lasted 175k miles then grenaded the engine!!
a few dollars now or a lot later still applies~
