Question about "check engine light"...

What is the longest anyone has gone with the check engine light on. I keep hearing how it's the biggest scam Acura has going. My check engine light came on last year for about a month and then I went on a long road trip and it went off during the trip.

Now it's back on again.

I feel like I should get it checked out now as Autozone's free diagnostics test is useless but I just dont have the time or want to fork over the $85 to Acura so they can tell me nothing and just turn the light off for me.

Anybody else have this problem with their TL's?

Thanks

The "check engine light scam" is definitley a myth. The check engine light comes on for several reasons. The most common problem that causes it is a loose gas cap. Make sure you click it three times after you pump gas. The other reasons could be a bad O2 sensor, MAF sensor or sometimes a bad ECU. Disconnect the negative battery for about 2 minutes and reconnect it (make sure you have your radio code if you have a factory radio). If it goes away, a loose gas cap was to blame. If not, you have another problem you will have to take to the dealership to handle. Good luck!

you can buy an OBD II reader pretty cheap. It will tell you what the code means. You take it from there.

dont mistake the 'check engine light' for the 'maintenance required' light. the first indicates some sort of issue (though not necessarily critical, at least its an issue), the second indicates well... pretty much nothing.

Have you done EGR recall service? It could be the EGR problem if you haven't done it. I got engine light pop up about a month ago. so I took my car to dealer then they drill the hole between EGR and intake then upgrade some EGR kits. It was all good since then.
