Qs on tranny replacement ( calling all with exp)
#2
GOOD, GOOD question. Here is what i know: I asked the dealer whether the replaced tranny is still covered under the 7/100k warranty extension and was told "No", its only covered by the standard 4/50k because the tranny has the 'new' parts installed. I then called Acura customer service in CA and asked the same question. Acura told me that it is covered under the extended warranty even if it has been replaced. I asked where this could be found in writing but i was only directed back to look to the original warranty extension letter, which i never recieved. Once i get a copy mailed to me i will look it over and give it my best interpretation (i am an attorney) and then probably follow up with a letter to Acura customer service reconfirming the information that they told to me.

Automatic Transmission Warranty Extension
Dear 3.2TL and 3.2CL Owners:
American Honda is announcing a warranty extension for the automatic transmission on all 2000-02 3.2TLs, all 2001-02 3.2CLs, and some 2003 3.2TLs and 3.2CLs. The automatic transmission and torque converter are now covered for a total of 7 years or 100,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the date of original sale. We are providing this warranty extension because a higher than normal number of automatic transmissions in certain vehicles may have problems due to defects in material or workmanship beyond the 4-year, 50,000-mile new vehicle limited warranty.
How do I know if there is a problem with my vehicle's automatic transmission?
If you think your vehicle has a transmission problem, refer to the operating characteristics below. Understanding these characteristics can help you decide if you need to call your Acura dealer.
These characteristics are normal; they should not require you to call your Acura dealer.
Quick downshifts. The transmission has a computerized control system called grade logic. When going down a hill, even a light touch of the brake pedal can cause grade lobic to downshift to the next lower gear. Downshifting helps to slow the vehicle through engine braking.
Does not always shift through the full range of gears. This can also be caused by the grade logic system keeping the transmission in the optimum gear for different driving conditions.
Mechanical noise when selecting a forward or reverse gear. It's normal to hear a slight mechanical noise when moving the shift lever from one gear to another. This noise can sound abnormally loud if any of the windows are down and you are parked next to a wall or another vehicle.
Vehicle may not hold its position when stopped on an incline in gear (may roll backward when the brake pedal is released). This can occur on most Acura-made vehicles. It is one of the measures used to improve fuel economy.
Hard shifts before the engine warms up. By design, the transmission shifts a little harder when the engine is cold. It returns to smoother shifting when the engine warms up.
These characteristics are not normal; if you experience any of them, call your Acura dealer.
While driving, the D5 indicator on the instrument panel flashes.
An abnormally loud noise from the transmission.
Extremely slow or delayed gear engagement, upshifts, or downshifts.
Abnormal gear slippage during upshifts or downshifts.
Erratic or excessively harsh shifting.
Automatic transmission fluid (ATF) leaks.
In the next few weeks, owners of potentially affected vehicles will be sent a copy of this letter along with reimbursement instructions in case they previously paid to have the transmission repaired or replaced.
It's important to maintain your vehicle's transmission according to the maintenance schedule in your owner's manual. Not maintaining the transmission properly can void the warranty coverage.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in this matter.
Sincerely,
AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO., INC.
Acura Automobile Division

Thanks. I'd tell you to go tell that to one of the members of this board, but I will keep him nameless, who was flaming me recently for being a corporate attorney. He even sent me PM asking me if I was for real or just a kid! I eventually asked the moderator to kill the thread because the flaming was getting the original post so off-topic that it was useless to keep it up. (You probably read the tread yourself last week because it was up to like 900 views before it was killed. It was about lost sales of TLs from people i know personally because of the way Acura is handling the tranny problem.)
I checked him out, and it turns out he's a manager of a hotel down in FL. I can only assume attorneys must stay at his hotel from time to time and bust his stones about every little detail on the bill and so forth so he has a particular dislike for them. OF course, if he gets injured when the tranny in his 2002 TLS goes, you'lll see how fast he reaches for the phone to call a lawyer!
I get a chuckle out of lawyer bashing in the US. We get a bad rap until we're needed, and then nobody is more loved

Hafids, which indiglos do you have? I am looking for a set of reverse indiglos (dark background at night, with just illiminated numbers). As opposed to the one that lights the whole dial up. I think that would be too distracting (bright) while driving.

I have the ones that light up entirely....was distracting (in a good way ) at first but no so anymore...Sort of like the navi when I first was getting used to it. Procarparts.com sells the reverse and I'm sure they'd look great. There is a dimmer on mine where you can bring the brightness down considerably but I hardly notice it with all the streets lit up so bright around here. Don't forget the he "ooo, ahhhh" affect when others see them.
Not easy to install, have a professional do it unless you're confident enough to (or extremely bored and have a few hours to kill).

I am pretty sure you have the ones procarparts sells, which give you like 6 colors to choose from, but those are NOT the reverse indiglos. Where did you get yours, and are those like the ones you have?
I am dying to do a gauge mod because the Acura dash lighting is so outdated. When i had my TL tranny replaced, I had a Chrysler Sebring sedan and i couldnt believe how nice even that car's dash was compared to my TL. The lighting was so bright (not even as white as the new Accords or the Lexus gauges, but it was still so impressive). The 2 options I have are to go with indiglos or to replace all the light bulbs with white LEDs. The LED option gets pretty expensive because of the price of each LED.
As for the install, i did a custom radar install about a year ago using a Whistler with a full digital display that blew alot of people away on this site because i had the digital display mounted right into the speed gauge (about where it normally reads MPH/KPH), so this install would be a walk in the park, so to speak. I dont know if my pics are still up from that post, or i would tell you to check it out.

okay, thanks for the reply 2002acuraTL, so basically my extended warrenty carrys over to the new tranny until i hit 100,000 or 7 years right? so even if my tranny failed at 99k miles and i had it replaced, once over the 100k mark i have no warrenty?

Ghost31711 - exactly right! up to 99,999 and you're fine.
2002acuraTL - you'll be fine on the installation! Sounds like a great job with the radar, would love to see pix. Also my indiglo's are these (http://www.procarparts.com/store/dis...**-TL-9902-6IG) - the whole thing glows and changes colors, they are not the reverse gauges. I paid $30 for the gauges. Remember to not removes the needles, just slip these over the top of the original guages.

Yes. Although the customer service dept does have some 'discretion' so that in a case such as you describe, they could probably give you a "customer satisfaction adjustment" and cover some if not all the cost.

A good relationship with your dealer never hurts. If you like to hop from one to another, you may not be so lucky, but if you're a long time patron of a certain dealership, that could give you some extra space that could help out in situations like the one you just described.
