Painting Chrome Grill Casing

Has anyone tried painting the chrome grill casing thing? I think it would look pretty cool in gunmetal or grey. Any suggestions for painting this?

i painted the outside piece of the trim black to match the color of my car. i think that is how the aspec tl's came in Canada with a color match trim piece. i think it is a small touch that makes it look a little more aggressive.

But is there a special process for painting it because of the chrome finish?

Dark picture so it looks more gray, but it is actually Gunmetal
Btw, your photoshoped picture looks more black chrome than gunmetal, huge diference.

Adam-that is exactly what I was looking for. It looks great . What kind of paint and what process did you use to do that?

I'm assuming you would want to sand down the chrome first with a fine grit sandpaper, then spray on some adhesive promoter or a primer. Then spray down a few coats of the color you want and finish with a clear coat.

Yeah like they said, just sand it down. I sanded all the chrome off down to the grey plastic and put a few coats or primer on. Then three coats of gunmetal spray paint from walmart, and another four coats of clear, also from walmart. Its the automotive spray paint though, forgot which brand. The clearcoat was House of Kolor or something. Goodluck with your project, I enjoy mine.

Also, due to age the black plastic grill itself was kinda off-black. I got some dark flat black paint as well and did the grill, and yet another few coats of clear. I forgot where I got it, but the clear was a non-shine protective clear. It all turned out how I wanted

you dont need to sand it all the way to the plastic...just sand it enough to rough it up, then use etch primer, then paint then clear

That molded grill looks beautiful. Did you just use some kind of molding putty or bondo or what?
