Unhappy Oil Mishap

So yesterday i changed out my oil filter to see if i can prolong the life of the oil since the hurricanes have kinda messed up production of oil. Anyway, i hadn't really noticed at the time but my dad called me while i went to the store. He said there was a puddle of oil where my car was. I ran out of the store to indeed see a drip drop. I immediately pulled off the tire to get access to the oil filter and see whats going on. So yeah my dad came over and we loosened it up and found that the seal from the old filter was still on when i had put the new one. This caused the oil to splutter out, we took the old seal off and put in like 3 quarts to bring the oil level back up. Stupid cheap fram filters. Thanks for letting me vent.
Oh also how much damage do you think i caused to my engine?

Before installing new oil filter you always have to make sure that the OLD filter seal is off. You had a common problem for people who are still learning how to change their oil I had some issues too, and I am still perfecting it.

did your oil light ever come on? If not you didn't harm your motor at all.

I'd suggest getting a magnetic oil drain plug just in case. They are cheap and it helps prevent metal shavings from being pumped through the engine.

The brand of filters had nothing to do with that.

Its up to the person doing the work to read and follow all instructions- like make sure old ring is removed or oil leak will result-

printed on the side of the box~

Just make sure you always clean the mount for the filter - if you do not see metal, you know the old gasket is still there - although I've never had that happen in my 30+ years of changing oil...

As long as the oil light did not come on, I think you should be OK.

I've encountered just a few stuck orings over the decades,,,
BUT
I always take some carb cleaner on a shop rag and wipe the surface free of old oil- and when you see bare shiny metal- that confirms no old gasket

IMO if the oil light comes on - its because the oil pressure has dropped very low (not sure the setting for TL.10-15psi?) but not good at that point- they call them idiot lights for a reason

3 qts low...ummmm, wait and see- though a short trip should not have caused permanent damage

IMO Its a good idea to partially pre-fill the new filter with new oil, and rub some on the oring and threads. Makes a great seal, and reduces the time engine running without oil flow.
The engine turns the oil pump- which has to fill the filter, then it goes into the engine...so getting most of the oil in the filter will help.
** Dont fill full or its a pita to install without dripping some back out and up your arm

Yeah, be sure to take your time when you change the oil. Go over everything twice because if you mess up it will cost you the most expensive part of your car.
