Noob Question!

So I read a lot of posts on how people think they are having misfiring issues. Now I know what misfiring is, but how do you tell if your car is misfiring? I'm guessing by the way it sounds? But how should it sound if it misfires then??

When I had a misfire in one of the cylinders in my '98 corolla, it hesitated when I mashed on the gas. I don't think it's a sound per se, but I did notice a decrease in power due to one cylinder not going off. I went to autozone and they checked the code, and sure enough it was a cylinder misfire. I changed all 4 plugs and I was good to go!

Most need the CEL to come on and have the codes read.

You can have misfire codes w/o any impact (had this on a civic once).

If your car is actually misfiring, it will jerk and shudder when you're pushing the car (cruising or speeding up). Also, when stopped in drive, the car will lurch forward when it misfires.

You can also smell fuel not fully burned if you have a misfire.

+1. If there's no codes, you're not experiencing cylinder misfire.....

Used to be termed "missing", now it seems it's called "misfiring".

Sometimes the car will shake and vibrate with a misfire.

When the ECU detects misfire, the CEL blinks. This is an OBD-II thing.

For example...
