Noise backing up

Noise backing up
80% of the time, when the car sits there for a few minutes or longer, I get a weird noise when I back up.
This happens quite often coz I have to back out of the driveway and parking lot all the time. It sounds like it's from the rear (right hand side even) and the sound is between rubbing and grinding. It's louder than rubbing and not as sharp as grinding.
It happens about 1 sec after moving in reverse and lasts quite long at around 1 second.
Anyone else has this problem?

Sounds like thats the antilocks kicking in. I think it is like a test procedure. I think as long as your breaks are working fine I would not worry. You do not hear any noise while your driving right. If you did then I would go get it checked out.

For those of you who dont know already.....putting the power mirror setting in-between the left and right side mirror adjuster causes your right side power mirror to tilt down when you put the car in reverse, hence causing a buzzing noise....i bet you what your hearing is the mirror tilt....check it out

According to various members, there is a slight buzzing noise after you put it in gear where the ABS systems performs a self-test.
Mine does this, usually twice, after I first put it in gear.
Wayneg, can you confirm?

It's not a buzzing noise. It's much louder than that buzzing noise when the mirror goes down.
It also happens after you backed up at least 4 or 5 feet. It only happens when I back up.
It feels and sounds like the caliper did not let go for a second. But that shouldn't be the case, otherwise I would hear that from the start not 4-5 feet after start backing up.

Every morning when I pull out of my garage I hear a buzzing noise when I first let the go move forward. It lasts about a second or two. I have experienced this in my '99 and my '02. I think its normal.

CONFIRMED! I heard that noise and I brought it to the dealer and before I even put the car in gear to reproduce the noice, the mechanic told me what MCD had posted.

Yep, Same here it happens twice once after starting, after putting in reverse then once usually after putting it back in drive. To add a third noise, there is a rubbing squeak (like rubber to metal) that happens the first time backing it up for the day???
