new key from Acura
I bought a new key for my car from acura. They said in order for it to work, they need to program it. They said it would cost $40.00. Is this something I can do myself???/

the key or the remote? Supposity there is a chip or something in the actual key that needs to be sync with the car, that's what the green blinking light is when you first put the key into the ignition, it's syncing. It does sound right that they would have to program it.

they key doesn't have to be sync'd with the car....i had a key made b4 i took my car off the lot and they cut it there and didn't go near the vehicle ?? can anyone confirm this? unless they can do it by the vin?

The key does have a transponder in it that needs to be programmed to the car if you use a new factory key. The dealer should have a replacement key called a "T5" that has a programable transponder in it. If you have one original key they can copy the original keys transponder signal to the new writable "T4" key. I think this should be Free when you buy the key.

yes there is a transponder chip in the key that has to be synched up with your car. A couple of months ago, I needed an extra key, so I purchased a honda key from streetkeys.com, and had to go to a participating locksmit to program it. I believe everything came out to $75.

that's a crazy safty feature. I would love to see someone try and hot wire our cars. You need the chip to activate the iginition, not the key. The key tells the car to look for the chip, if it is found the car starts.
It would be interesting to find out if you bent your key (unusable in ignition)and cut a matching key to use in the ignition. Would the car's ignition turn and then recognize the chip in the key that is NOT in the ignition, hense starting the car...... basically if there was two keys on the same keyring, one with a chip but bent so it won't go in the ignition, and the other without the chip but with the proper keycut.... what do you think....
I know the SL500 has a "creditcard sized" key that has no ignition. as long as the card is in the car (in your pocket or laying in the passengers seat) the pushbutton ignition will activate. Not sure what would happen if the key was just outside the car...car starts....you drive away.....car stops?.....car runs untill you shut if off, then you can't start it b/c your keys are at home?... not sure....
Be interesting to findout if we could put in a push button ignition using the same concept as the SL500, the chip in vacinity of the driver, the chip would be detected by the car, and push the button....any ideas,....

transponder works within a proximity. I heard you can get something to reporgram the transponders in the keys. i dont remember where i saw it but it looked pretty handy. And our cars are not that hard to hot wire. there are ways around the transponder, its just a matter of how much you care. Remember everything is possible

The Key has a chip that coresponds to the car. Without that chip, your car will not start. If you notice when you purchased your car you were given a valet key, different color rubber, that chip in that key only allows certian options to function in the car. In either case, the key needs to be synced with an existing key for it to work properly.

The Key
When I purchased my car he only had one key so I whent to the dealer to get a new one because I was adding remote start to my car and they needed another one... The dealer charged me around $95 to make another copy.. If you plan on getting an extra copy remember to take all the keys as they reprogram all of the keys by changing the passcode.

The chip inside the keys will stop the average person from hot wiring your car. But if you know what you're doing, I've been told its pretty easy to bypass the chip and get the car to start. I know people's cars have been stolen and the thief bypassed it, so obviously it isn't foolproof. But then again, how many things are foolproof?

the grey key dosent disable anything except the glove compartment and the trunk entry lock. Other wise all the functions are the same same chip, different tooth layout.
