Neon Blue Footwell Lighting

I have been wanting to wire neon blue light to the footwell like the INSPIRE footwell lighting, but i couldn't figure out how to do it.
Well, thanks to ElegantTL-S and D011AR instructions, i finally did it.

This is how it looks in the dark

This is how it looks in the day time. The driver side doesn't look as bright because there is alot of empty space under the driver side footwell compared to the passenger side, so it doesn't reflect much of the light.

This is how it looks from outside.

I just used zip ties at the end of the 10" neon lights to anything i could secure it too. After everthing is done, u can hide the wires nicely....you can't even see the neon tube or wiring.

I got the neon lights at Walmart, they are 10" for $10, they also have a 15" for $15, this is pretty CHEAP. They are also bright compared to other cheap version.

Instructions: Open up the passenger side fuse area. There is a connector with 4 pins. Tap the positive into the White/Blue wire and Negative to the Black/White wire. I figure that the neons are only pulling 4 watt each, so i decided to wire them directly, if you are planning to pull more, use a relay or somthing.

This will now connect the footwell lights directly to the "door lights" not the " center light". The light will turn on when you take the keys out of the ignition, open any door, unlock the doors. They DO NOT turn on when you turn the center light to the on position. They turn off when you close the doors, put they key into the ignition or lock the doors or have the door open for a period of time and it will turn off.

Its a TL-S, and is either a 2002 or 2003.At least it has the TL-s gauges and shifter, but strangely enough the seats and steeringwheel do not appear perforated. Also it looks like a gray interior. Hmmmmm.

If the 4 pin connector is on the passenger side, how did you wire the driver's side? If its pretty easy to hide the wires, I will probably do this mod.

There is an opening between the driver and passenger side in the very back of the center console, very big opening.

turbox777
Yes it does fade in and out. It does everything the center light does when it's in the "Door" position.

KaMLuNg
The trick to this mod is quite the opposite. The power is not activated by the +12 V source but rather the ground. The lights has to be connected to a constants +12v power, and when the resistance to the black/white wire drops it becomes a virtual ground and the lights turn on...when the resistance goes up, there is no connection to ground and the lights turn off. What you have to do is wire a switch in parallel to a grounded point. This will let you turn on the light when you want too, but it won't override the "door light"

I have a similar setup, using the cheap neons from walmart. However, i did not wire them to the doors, and instead used a switch to manually turn on and off.

Help!

I bought the lights and thought I tapped the correct wires but they are not coming on. Could someone please post pics of the connector showing which wires they tapped into? I used the two center wires on the connector. I have the blue neons from walmart. I need to know which wire to connect the plain wire to and which wire to connect the wire with the stripe to. Thanks

Dude that straight up looks like my car. I D E N T I C A L. Until a few weeks ago, I had the same exact setup, but I found the passenger side neon hanging too low and often getting hit by the passenger's foot. That's why I took the neons off. I'm going to be putting in some smaller neons soon though. The car definitely looks cool with neons at night.

That is a nice setup!! That color goes perfectly with the blue ambient lights of the 2004 TL. I'll have to post the link to this thread in the 3rd G forum.

Well I was bored so I went out and bought the neons and all the needed stuff. Total cost of everything you need $26.91 (price can vary) and everything is there at Wal-Mart.

You'll need the $10 (2) neon, box of wire tap, and wire ties.

Slice off the 12V plugs

Then wire tap the two wires.........I did all this with a flash light in the dark too, so it's not too hard, took me 30 mins.

Here's is with one side off

1) Remove the passenger fuse box panel.

2) Run the wires.

3) Locate the harness with four wires. (The one with the red ciricle around it in the pic below) and unplug it (dome light and map lights should no longer function now).

4)Slice the 12V plug off the neon lights and locate the positive and the negative wires. The wire with the white line should be the positive and the clear wire should be the negative (this is for 54 Studio 10" neon lights, if you aren't sure, disasemble the 12V plug and see which is the positive and the negative)

5) Use the wire taps to connect the positive wire of the neon light to the white wire w/ blue line on the harness.

6) Wire tap the negative wire on the neon light with the black wire w/ white line on the harness (look close and make sure it's the black wire with the white line, not just the regular black wire)

7)Secure the wire taps (circled in blue in the pics)

8) Plug the harness back in and see if the lights work.

9) Clean up and tuck the wires away and use the wire ties to secure the neons.
