My first real Mechanical problem in over 205k
Well im having my first mechanical problem with the TL (out side of a ac compressor at 15k under warranty) My Power steering pump is going out, the bearings are bad and boy does it make noise, and i think its likely due to me having the belt too tight.(its also the whine i had earlier after the conversion that went away when i straightened and loosened the belt) but the damage i think was done. Oh well 205K+ on it isnt too bad.
Edit: Other than the 5 trannies

A steering pump after more than 200k miles? I won't be suprise but I am amazed that you could go that far with only a steering pump.... besides the 5 trannies. heheheehe ....

I bet it would still be perfectly fine if the belt wernt too tight after the swap (and it slid over making it even tighter)

Hello all,
Wow, that is excellent life span for power steering pump. Question in regards to part replacement:
1. Did you replace with OEM (Remanufacture?) or aftermarket branch?
2. If you don’t mind the cost of part for DYI?
Thanks

Takes about 20 min to swap out.
bought it used with 30k on it for 60 bucks
new they are 300
I did put in a used (32k miles) engine, but it didnt come with any accessory drives on it

Hope this helps all.......
My powersteering pump also was making a big racket. I removed the powersteering pump belt and the noise went away. I called for a price, i got $275+ at local shops. I'm trying to budget due to a wedding coming up. So i did some research for a bearing but i couldn't come up with a part number. I took the pump apart, and behold the front bearing was bad and had a part number. I went to a bearing shop, and i bought the bearing for $20. I ordered the seals from a website i found for my pump. I spent about $50 on all parts. It was easy on a scale of 1 to 10 i rate it a 4.
I'm in the military, before i joined i was a certified technician. I'm a big DIY kinda guy. And i'm good at researching parts and fixing my own stuff.
Here is the site that i bought the seals from http://www.acuraoemparts.com/delray/jsp/home.jsp
I found this site very helpfull, it breaks down the part you are looking up. It has all kinds of parts. I hope this is helpfull. If there is a big enough demand for a DIY for the front bearing. I will be willing to rebuild my pump again just to help you guys out..................
any other question feel free to ask...

Not sure if you can really consider this to be your first "real" mechanical issue. Transmissions are certainly a "real" mechanical issue in my book.
Alternatively, look at the issues I've had with my GM beater, a '96 Saturn SL2, all before 100k. Mind you, none of these repairs were covered under warranty, and most of them haven't been fixed, though I just ordered the parts and will be fixing them next week:
- Upper Motor Mount @ 50k
- Transmission top cover gasket leak @ 50k
- Crankcase breather tube @ 60k
- Valve Cover Gasket and plug tube seals @ 70k
- Alternator @ 70k
- Window Trim @ 85k
- Trunk Wiring harness @ 55k
- Engine Coolant Temp Sensor and Wiring Harness @ ? miles

Well considering the trannies are a known issue that is bound to effect most, i didnt consider it a real mechanical issue
