Lexus Behavior
Lexus Behavior
I've been visiting ClubLexus, trying to learn more about that brand and the GS-series before making my next new car decision. There are a lot of intelligent, rational people there. Unfortunately, I've seen a lot of posts like this one:
Now I think Lexuses (Lexi?) are fine autos. I also happen to like Acuras. Why do people have to put down someone else in order to stroke their own egos? Can't these Lexus drivers just be happy that they own such a great car? I could understand this kind of immature jealousy on a Kia board, but why do so many Lexus owners feel the need to "prove" their superiority? There's really no need to respond to this post--I'm just venting--but if you can shed some light on the psychology at work here I guess I would appreciate it.
Amen, that TL forum is the worst, everyone comes across like they're 19 and just traded in their 5.0 for a TL-S. All the posts are the same, "Can we beat this car, best bang for buck, is this the fastest car on the planet, someone stole my headlights, this or that is falling apart, etc". And every argument is always " Yeah, but mine cost $20k less, Acura IS a luxury division, off the line we can't be beat, blah, blah, blah..". Don't they realize that most of the people that buy a MB, BMW or Lexus fortunately aren't necessarily worried about the bottom line, looking for a stripped luxury vehicle, aka "bang for the buck". Although BMW and Mercedes have some minor quality issues (which are magnified even larger, only because of the pricetag and their reputations) they are solid vehicles nonetheless. I'd be hard pressed to find many owners of these vehicles trading it in for a TL-S, because they know what they'll expect based on they're prior vehicles, and no doubt they'll be disappointed stepping into the Acura. And let's face it , alot of people are paying for the prestige, and Acura just doesn't have it yet, and adding the RSX moved them a step backwards. I just hope that the Acura forum isn't a representation of the company image, because if so, Acura will continue to remain a steppingstone nameplate.
I agree, no need to put down another forum BUT...
the TL forum does seem to be plagued with "Do you think the TL-S could beat an xxxxxxx"
0-60 numbers are published before you buy a car. Don't waste your time or energy racing on public streets to try and prove something.

Here is a representative quote from another thread there where the Lexus GS owners are frantically trying to compare their car to the rest of the fastest sedans on the road.
So they have the same arguments about "Can I beat a XXX?" and make lots of excuses why anything faster/more luxurious/better in any way should be excluded. You're right--I am getting too worked up about this. It's just that I was actually leaning toward getting a Lexus next time, but now I'm doubting myself again. If the behavior I see over there is representative of the kind of personality that's attracted to Lexus, I don't think it's for me!
Of course we can exclude M class or AMG class, for that money worth, you can build a GS killing both of them. If you want one GS matches M5 performance, get SRT's TC, and its HYI, it will be pretty darn close. Plus, M5 is an manual, thus supposely it's faster.
IMO it's not a fair contest if you put these sedens together, an M5 is close to 80k+ for that extra 30+k you can build a lightspeed GS = )
GS430/400 should remain the best price/value. it's the king of its league.

I think you need to calm down
Buy the car that suits your needs and budget the best.
You are comparing a RWD sedan to a FWD which are different animals.
TL-S - best highway luxury cruiser for the money but brakes suck
GS - best RWD sports sedan but more $$$ and suspension is tuned more for luxury than sport
540 - like the GS but less luxury and more sport, available in manual
IS300/BMW330 - similar tradeoffs but smaller back seat than GS/5/TL
Choosing a car based on forum participants is just fubar imho.

Everyone does that kind of crap, and I'm so tired of it. Some people are so narrow minded. I don't know what it accomplishes for them. I chose a TL-S because the price was what I wanted to spend. I didn't feel I need to spend anymore for what I received. To be honest, I looked and wanted an E46, but decided I really didn't want to spend that much. It was tempting, I actually got the the point of talking numbers with a sales rep. But decided that I just didn't think it was worth it. I mean power seats were an option...come on. It's not that I couldn't. (and I think that's where some of those guys think they're better) They think I and most Acura owners can't purchase a Lexus, BMW, or MB...whatever. It's rolls right off my shoulder. I'm 28, married, baby boy, two fine cars, and a new house. Oh yeah, and my stock portfolio didn't plummet like most because I didn't have everything buried in Technology. I wonder how many had to sell their Bimmer, MB, or Lexus after that. Another funny thing is most German car owners don't really consider Japanese cars as high of a status simple. Maybe that's why those guys were saying what they said about the M5. But then Acura is one of the only Japanese car companys with a sports car recognized as a "super car" or "exotic". Anyway, it all boils down to what you want to spend. If you like the Lexus GS(which it's an extremely nice car) then buy one. Same with the Acura. Can you imagine how many people own Lexus's and Acura's that don't even know boards like this exist. It's only the enthusiast. And because of that, your going to have extremely strong feeling on either side of the line. I like several cars by several manufacturers, plus these are just glorified grocery getters anyway. Are you seriously going to being lining this baby up for a race? No, you'll save that kind of fun for your M roadster. I'm sure I'll get some flaming for this one, especially when the Lexus guys get wind of this.

I could have bought just about any car on the market. My house is paid off, my cars and motorcycle are paid for, blah, blah, blah. I would love to have the new SC430. I think that car is a work of art. But I’m a regular guy, living within my means. I just can’t bring myself to splurge on such indulgences. I want value, but with a sense of taste and style. The TL-S and CL-S came closest to meeting my needs. I’m not looking for status or bragging rights. Hell, here in Wisconsin, few people even look twice at my car.
If you want to drive a car that screams “hey, dig me,” then spend the extra money and get the marquee brand name. Otherwise, go with what fits you as a person, and fits your values.
One thing that does bother me is being stereotyped as a 19 year-old kid looking to race Mustangs. That is pure BS. I’m a 39 year-old kid trying to get from point A to point B as fast as is humanly possible.

who cares what posters on clublexus, bimmer, or anywhere else thinks? If 1SICKLEX hates this board so much, why is he/she here all the time?
the great thing about these boards is that you get so many different viewpoints. Everyone has their own opinions, and it shouldn't bother you if yours aren't the same.

hell...I'll put in a F360 engine and I'll beat a M5! ha!!
I do acknowledge the fact that we are a little over our cars here, but this is a TL-forum...we have every right to do that.

Oh, a lil something for Acura Luvers...
When I got my TL-S from Stevens Creek Acura in March, someone drove in his 996 Carrera and want to exchange for a CL-S.

honestly... who cares? Every person who owns a car thinks their car is the greatest. Of course when you get thousands of owners together we're all going to think we're better then so and so.... it's like that on every board. Just leave them alone and they'll leave us alone. It's only a car. If some people need to bash others to make themselves feel better, just let them. They'll have a nice car, but they won't go far in life......

IMHO, anyone who wants to flame you for your comments must not be able to read. I think your comment that those of us who participate in these forums represent a very small , enthusiastic fraction of ownership is the key point. A lot of people seem to lose their enthusiasm for cars, play, etc., as they "mature". And lots of people associate their wheels with their perception of their own status. Some people are just ignorant and small. That's life. My dad thought my car's 260 hp was "obscene", until I took him for a nice ride.
Like you, I originally had my eye on a new 330ci. But I really couldn't see putting out another ten grand for all that I got in my TLS.
I'm older than most on this forum, but I'm happy to say that I still have that entusiasm. Some have a lot more than I do, some maybe less. It just doesn't take me to the drag strip, and common sense keeps me from racing down city streets. If no one is hurt, then I enjoy hearing about how everyone else enjoys their TLS, BMW, Lexus, or whatever!

Damn!!!!!!!!I knew I should have bought a Lexus. I was really looking to make a statement with my car. Oh well, I guess my Acura is better than those Geo Metro's. That is of course if you don't have a modded out Metro. I don't want to get flamed by the Metro board guys.
Don't worry--I'm not going to make my decision on a new car based solely on opinions from others on an internet board. I have been visiting ClubLexus because I don't know that much about the brand or the cars. I've been in the Acura family for awhile now, so I know the model lineup, the pros and cons of their customer service, etc.
Yes, there will always be bad apples and crazy enthusiasts. Everyone who drives a TL, GS, or whatever originally bought it because they felt it best met their needs. The mentality I don't understand is the passionate disrespect for other people, just because they didn't make the same decision in the marketplace that you did.

It's a shame some people have to identify their self esteem by how much they paid for their car.
Cars are cars. Just enjoy the Drive.Glad you're keeping an open mind. Good luck with what you decide.
That wasn't meant as a personal attack on you at all, 1SICKLEX! In fact, you've been one of the more helpful people! In retrospect, I should have blanked your handle out of that post because it can be taken out of context (in fact I'll edit it right now).
But you can't honestly tell me there aren't every bit as many "Can we beat this car?" posts at ClubLexus as here, can you?

someone who is 10years younger and whose daddy has 10x more money will sink 150K into a friggin miata just so he can say he did.

Re: 1SICKLEX UNLEASHED.......
To lexus guy..
Lexus guy. I think you talk too much.. and you are such a dumb... i'm 23.. and i can beat your machine anytime.. you come to TL site with no respect.. i can't buy your GS for nothing.. i bet you don't even have navigation system on your GS.. plus if you want the MB or BMW.. why don't you buy one and get one.. and tell LEXUS are not good enough to compete with MB or BMW..
the demands are TLS right now.. i bet you that TL sold more that GS.. and Acura TLS is just behind the BMW for sports sedans... Acura will get you off soon... just wait..
Let's make sure if you understood what am I talking about.. it is consumer demand by people.. not luxury.. not performance.. it is an attitude of people.. it people's opinion.. your opinion just don't make any sense.. I could buy GS but it's not my demand.. its price is high.. and does not even look like sports sedan.. it is not my demand... supply is not enough for me.. and price index is not my consumption..TLS is too great value.. compare to GS.. and in japan.. HONDA and NISSAN is known for great street racing then toyota..Toyota is off racing.. what i mean is that they don't make fast car.. your fast car could be supra and sc430 and GS430.. i bet NSX and S2000 is faster than your cars for sure.. give me a statement.. if supra and sc430 can run in under 5.3 seconds.. and let me give you a statement that Acura NSX can run in under 5.1 or maybe better i heard it will be under 5 seconds.. the new NSX 2003 is 430hp.. and it is pricing at $130,000.00 will be sold in USA. And it is hard to get it.. and it will run with Ferrari and porsche.. well.. your car is luxury but don't forget that it is not for street racing.. i never seen any toyota guys run for street racing.. they are very SLLLLOOOOWWWWWWWWWW......... slower than Nissan.... awwllll.......
if you have problem with Acura products don't buy acura.. keep buy toyota.. and don't even think about MB, BMW, and Acura..
Acura is keep getting better enough.. to kill your car
Am i right or not?
give me a feed back...
what do you think guys?

why are we going over this again??? if we are comparing stock vs stock, our TL-S will be no match!!!!!!
lets be serious for once, we all own great cars but the lexus GS is in a different class of cars. we should be focussing out attention on those beamer ppl!!!...hahahah!...j/k
cant we just get along?????

yeah I think we've overkilled this topic too...
I'm sure most people are admires of both cars...I know I am...there're plenty of things you can compare between a GS3 (more refinement and luxury) and our TL-S (value and power) ...
As for a GS4...we don't even have the same cylinder.
peace.

I'm really not trying to start a war between the boards, nor am I trying to reopen the continual "which car is better" debate. Anyone who has read my previous posts should hopefully understand that I am firmly in the "to each his own" camp.
What I was getting at was attitude. Yes, I've seen it here in the TL board as well. In fact, to give you a better idea of what I mean, here is the exact post I put on ClubLexus earlier:

I'm new here, and I'm probably going to be attacked into submission or have my ClubLexus membership revoked for saying this, but here goes...
I'm wondering why some of the Lexus owners on this board have such an immature, insecure attitude about themselves?
There, I've said it. I don't mean to over-generalize, because I have certainly learned a lot from the majority of you who are open-minded and level-headed. But I am more and more amazed at the level of jealousy, envy, and anger directed at other car manufacturers and those who buy from them.
Lexus makes some of the finest automobiles in the world. And to afford one, you have to attain a certain level of success. Therefore, I would think that Lexus owners and drivers would have little need to batter anyone else. Yet I see a lot of downward angst directed at Acura (seen as that wanna-be, pseudo-luxury stepping stone for the unworthy who can't afford a Lexus) and upward jealousy directed at Mercedes and especially BMW (who apparently create such overpriced, under-qualitied blandmobiles that no one in their right mind would buy one).
Sad is the person whose self-worth comes from the kind of car he drives. And sorry is the person who feels the need to bash others in order to prop up his own insecure ego.
You own a great car. You wouldn't have bought one if you didn't think it was the best car for your needs. So please continue to be proud, enthusiastic, and even passionate about your purchase. Just realize that when you direct such strong negativity at others that it reflects poorly on you, ClubLexus, and the brand as a whole.
Let the flaming begin...

whoa, calm down everyone..
Iceman:
I don't see what's up with people trying to stir up things. Of course there will be people who are more excited about their own cars. And no one is trying to bash any other cars. My good friend drives a TL (D011AR) and I don't see why I should bash a car just because it costs less than mine.
You came to ClubLexus asking for opinions on cars. We gave you ours. You seem to accept what we're saying. We don't talk sh*t about other cars. And now you come here saying we're all trolls fooling around with attitudes? I think you shouldn't generalize a whole board by 1 incident. Just isn't fair.
Every forum will have those who will just plain cuss out stuff talk smack. I see those here (a few), I see those in ClubLexus (not many), and I see those in Bimmer.org (too many to list). If you're going to be annoyed by them, then learn how to calm down and be self-contained.
We don't really need a car war or anything, and please don't judge a whole forum by using ONE PERSON's extreme post. Don't need that.
Just relax.

This thread has had its share of good posts and bad posts. However, in the end, I think this thread has run its course.
People will always run their mouth about how great their car is and put down others who have a different car in the same class. But in the end, who cares? Are you happy with your car? If so, then it shouldn't matter what anybody else says.
And with that, lets get back to talking about the TLS, which is what this forum is for.
End of thread.
