Just Got Speeding Ticket!!

So this really sucks driving home after just geting done with a first date with a girl , which sucked by the way, doing about 60 in a 55 in the far left lane. About a half mile doen the road I have to get off at my exit. I can't slow down to move over, too many people behind me, so I see an opening a few cars ahead of me so I nail it so I can get over, come around the bend, and there is a sheriff sitting there. Got me for 85 in a 55, ouch!!!! So I explained to the guy what happened, and in all actuallity the guy was really nice about it and understood why I sped up but he said he still had to give me a ticket, but that he would write down why I sped up, so that it would help me out when I went to court. He also said that at 30 over they can pull your license if I just paid it and didn't show up to court and try to get it reduced?? So I got a ticket for 30 over, 6 points, $277.50. Man does this suck. So my question is, do you guys have any suggestions about what I can do to get this reduced?? Is doing traffic school a good option and how long do these classes last??

nypd , ncpd, are the hardest. they made a new law in nassua county :
100 a year for offenses 6 points totaling during the 18 month period plus 25 bucks for each extra point accrued during that period and $250 a year for 3 years for dwi's totaling $700. i kno this cause i recently got a dwi.

Not to worry. I am very experienced in this matter. Just file for a court date and go there. The prosecutor will offer you a "plea bargain" which means that they will either reduce the fines and points of your ticket to a lower offense. Usually, they will lower the offense to unsafe driving which is a generic no point ticket that runs about $125 plus court fees which is about $25. I have been caught speeding in excess of 30-40mph and my license is still clean, no point. I been caught speeding many times and always go to court, just ask to speak with a prosecutor and accept the plea bargain.

i went to go fight an illegal lane change ticket down in NJ from CT. the prosecutor didnt move 1 inch. plus the courthouse is right above the police station - so the cop was sitting right there. and the prosecutor goes 'is the cop lying' while hes sitting next to me.. total shit.

i know the local prosecutor (CT) will deal - at least when i was driving 65 in a 30...plea bargained to speeding and $100 fine. too bad i punched out my rear window costing me another $200.

oh well..

Get a traffic court lawyer.

I once got nailed just entering a construction zone doing 72 in a 35. The lawyers fees were more than paid for by the reduction in fine he got me, let alone insurance savings. The ticket was reduced to tailgating.

agreed. its almost always worth getting a lawyer. yea sometimes you may pay more for the lawyer than the ticket was for but the amount you save in insurance is worth it, and alot of times they will get it really reduced, or no points

if you can go to traffic school, DO IT!!!
if you fight it in court and loose, you will also loose your chance to go to traffic school.

Do a traffic school online. You can complete 5min at a time if you wish as long as you leave the browser logged for 4hours and visit all sections. Take the test and bam, no points.

That ticket you prob wont be able to get off with out lots more than $300 spent in lawyers, time and court fees. I'd say pay that shit and take the course.

etxx <--- man with lots of tickets experience (DMV job for a while)

johnny--2k, I was going east on I94 by State Fair Park. It was between the 84th Street exit and the 68th and 70th Street Exit, which was where I needed to get off.

JimmyTLS, you are very lucky!!! That's not how it works in Mass (and New Hampshire and Vermont for that matter). I've tried that "bargaining" approach - they wouldn't even consider it! Maybe that's just my luck, but I've never heard about anyone in our neck of the woods, who can get away with no points after being caught speeding (unless the case is dismissed for some reason). If I were you, 2003TL-S, I wouldn’t count too much on bargaining – they don’t make those laws that tough and then let you bargain your way out of trouble. Get a lawyer, if you know a good one, or just hope that you were born under the lucky star! I fill sorry for you – have had a few speeding tickets myself .

in Indiana we have something called pre-trial diversion...the prosecutor offered it to me when I went to court and if I "behaved" for 6 months, nothing went on my license. I still had to pay the $125 court costs for the day though, but nothing on the license and no insurance increase, well worth it. if you can get it, go for it...cheaper than a traffic lawyer.

Cops usually schedule court appearance on a specific day for all tickets he wrote. Just reschedule it so he won't show up and you will win the case.

it doesnt work like this either...Trust me, a ticket like that cant dissapear. Take the online driving course (which you can fail and take again withough paying again and take up to 90days and even 5min at a time) and pay the $277.

you WILL SPEND more than $300 on court fees and lawyers...much cheaper AND TIME EFFECTIVE to pay that shit and take the course!

Are you sure you can take traffic school for a 6 point ticket? In california you can only take traffic school for a single point ticket. I know, becuase exhibition of speed is a 2 point ticket....

i'm in Fl buddy, and here it can be done...check, or call the DMV (its free and takes 2 minutes)

Most places you CAN take the course for a particular ticket (regardless of points, as long as you still have a licence) but in some states you are limited to one course per year (ie. Florida).

3 Solutions To consider:
1) Lawyer and court, fight with a change of loosing and wasting lots of money you could've spent on the car
2)Pay ticket and take course (btw if you take course, ticket cost is MUCH LOWER ~ $30-50)
3) Pay and get points, and have insurance skyrocket for the next two years and God help you if you get another speeding ticket.

what are you gonna do?

that sucks man...that area is horrible with sherrifs, so many places for them to hide around bends and over hills!

Good to see another TL'er in the area!

Seems like policies liek this vary from state to state.

Here in NY, Defensive driving can only be done every 18mths. There are no other courses. While it will take points off your license, and help keep you from posibley getting your license suspended if you haev too many points, it does nothing for those points from an insurance standpoint. so you still get nailed by the insurance, and all the initial fines etc, are nothing compared to insurance premiums.
