Installed my Comptech quiet tips - review inside

OK, before you all go and rag on me, I'll admit I love the sound of the Comptech exhaust. But the droning sound at around 2000-2500 rpms gives me a serious headache.

Install
So I installed the tips about 15 minutes ago. Took all of about 10 minutes to install. I took 99WDP's advice and polished up the inside of the tips with some steel wool, sorry no Dremel. I spent more time polishing them then actually installing them.

One screw holds each one in. It's drilled into the top of the exhuast from the inside so it's not noticeable.

Test Drive
Wow it makes a huge difference in the resonance. 99WDP said he got rid of about half the sound. Mine is completely gone. Sounds very close to stock. Yeah I know, leave me alone.

Final Results
Ok well there is some bad news. The tips work so well that they eliminate the nice throaty growl of the Comptechs throughout the rpm range, even at idle. So it's kind of a tradeoff.

Overall I am very happy. I got the Comptechs solely for looks, the sound was an added bonus.

Worst case is I can easily, and quickly remove the tips for times when I need the noise, and put them back when I want peace and quiet. Well it's a thought anyway.

Neil

BTW, here's what they look like.

Neil I don't blame you at all. I want to keep the stock quiet sound but as soon as the Blaze rear kit goes on I am going to need the tips to look a tad beefier.

Just curious...why didn't you take the route I am going to and get add-on tips instead?

well instead of polishing the tips... i just sprayed them with 1200 degree high temp black paint. They are still drying...
Doesnt stick to well, but you wont notice that in the exhaust.

Kind of the same reason you didn't buy Konigs instead LSportlines, Ground Controls instead of Zeals.

I'm thinking you might actually gain a little due to the increased backpressure. Who knows.

I think it's a lot psychological.

I thought it was the other way around...if you put a straight pipe in you increase HP, kill backpressure, and kill torque...whereas if you increase backpressure you kill HP, and increase torque...

I thought you lose low-end torque with a larger pipe?

Crzy Acura,

It is not in your head! I also felt that the car was a little slower after I installed the quiet tip inserts about one month ago.

Somewhere I read (probably in the Comptech web site) that the tip inserts reduce 1HP, but you had already gained 2HP when you installed the Comptech exhaust. So it is not a big deal.

I hope you are pleased with the way the exhaust sounds now. I am.

NSXNEXT,

I also thought that the resonance had dissapeared, but after one month it is obvious that it is still there. However, it is less pronounced and not annoying at low rpms.

Well i did like the tips..... but today i had my headers installed, and maybe that was too much back pressure... cuz my right tip blew off today while driving... :wow: :wow: I have no idea when it flew off, most likely when i was testing my headers out. I hope no one was behind me!!!

Damn my luck.

Question Headers

Crzy Acura,

My next and last upgrade would be the Comptech Headers. I would like to add more power to my TL, but do not want to add more noise.

Could you describe the sound of the headers? Is it loud?

Thank you for your response.

Here's what Carazy Acura's look like. He painted them black. You can barely see them. Even without the paint you really don't notice them.

Yup, you actually drill a hole into the inner portion of the pipe. The screw is inside the pipe on the top. Can't see it at all.
