ideas for increasing mileage

i run about 40% highway, 60% city and i only get about 300 miles to a tank. this doesnt seem very right at all given acura's mileage stats..

i dont even get 300 on most brands of gas. only on citgo do i get that much.

i have 5w-20 in my engine now. im not running A/C either....

any ideas? tips?

Try a tank or two of white Gas (american High test). It`s a little expensive but worth it.

It sounds like you have a heavy foot. How do you drive?

You get 300 miles a tank. Do you fill up just when the gas light comes on? When the gas light comes on there is about 4 gal left in the tank. So you used about 13.2 gal when the light comes on. 300miles / 13.2 gal ~ 23 miles per gal. So thats not that bad when the TL average is 19 city and 29 highway. Ways to increase gas milage have been discussed but I'll list them again. Get a higher air flow intake filter like K&N or Comptech. Always use the highest rating (93 octane) if you can. Make sure the tire pressure is at the recommend psi. Change to denso spark plugs. Don't leave your windows open on the highway. Fuel system cleaner or octane booster. and lot of it has to do with your driving habits. Don't floor it and keep the rpm below 3k, so you don't kick in VTEC.

yeah i usually fill up when the light comes on. around then i have about 270... i figured i'd get 30 on the rest. i had no idea the tank had about 4 gallons left when the light came on. i always thought it was two.

myyyy mistake.

if you put it that way it doesnt sound so bad. :o

Well our fuel tank cap is 17.2 gal. When the light comes on and I fill up its usually around 13.2 gal I pump in for a full tank. So yeah its around 4 gals left. Try it out on your car and see.

Just print a receipt from the gas pump. It tells you how much gal you put in. I been keeping track of mpg for a long time. I usually get 300 miles for 13.2 gal on my work route. So you're not that off if you get 270 per 13.2 gal....just make sure how many gals of gas you used......when the light comes on your car might be slightly off then mine.

btw on the highway doing about 60-70 miles on cruise control gives our car the optium fuel efficiency.

K & N Air Filter?

hzm82 - does the air filter make any noticeable difference by itself? Considering, that is, all the other variables are done, i.e. keep air pressure at proper p.s.i.

and...Why Denso plugs?

I personally gain about 2 miles per gallon from the K&N but its only been on for about two weeks (so its still pretty clean and highflowing). I still recommend getting the K&N filter because anything is better then the paper filter used by Honda and you don't need to replace it (just clean it every 15k). My TL is used for just work so my route is pretty routin so I can guage these things and I check my tire pressure every sunday. We have stock platinum tipped spark plugs so you won't see that huge in milage increase if the plugs are still new (replacing them around 50k is still a good idea). They do last awhile 100k, but I got header installed and going to Denso IK20 (colder tips) gave me better performance.

The K&N will work best with other like mods as well. This next part may seem a little strange but bear with me. The filter allows air to flow into the engine more easily creating (for a very brief time) a lean condidtion so the fule injectors put more fuel in the engine. This results in more power (duh). Since you don't need this extra power to more the car the speed you want you don't push on the gas pedal as much. Now the average response I get to this "BS!" but letting up on the gas pedal has a greater fuel saving ratio than running without the filter.

Also, look at it this way. That K&N can run anywhere from $38 to $50 depending on where you get it from. A store will sell a plain paper filter for about $15 and you'll replace it about 10 to 15 times before the useful life of the car is over. But the K&N will last the life of the car and then some.

Testimonial: I used to drive a 94' Talon ES and the sticker on it when it was new said 22 city and 27 highway. With using premium gas (93 or higher and this is also a big plus), a Borla cat-back system and the K&N I would get about 25 city and (get this) up to 40 on the highway at 80 to 85 mph!! I hated to see that car go but it was time for me to get something else since I'm doing better in life financialy.

Old saying: "Let the engine breathe and it will pay you back with power"

Yeah, 300 miles to the tank is great for the TL. In fact, I rarely achieve it. Last time I got 184 miles before the light came on. (All short trips, less than 3 miles in heavy stop-n-go traffic, black/black TL with A/C at 68 in 95 degree Texas heat). It was about 14mpg. I only use Chevron Supreme.

I've also heard that a new car has to be broken in before you will see decent gas mileage. This was the case on my Grand Am/GT which I'm selling to get the TL-S. I think I had to wait till it hit 3 or 4k before I got an avg of 23/24 mpg.

What was experience when your TLs were new?

my TL gave me around 23mpg in the beginning and during this spring has bumped up to 25-26mpg. definitely broken in

and cruise for me hasnt yielded an increase in mileage so i just keep it around 70 on the highway and try not to push hard in the city

plz don't suggest that, I have my spare out because I got 18s and I suggested that the person should try to reduce weight to get more milage and that I had my spare out (and I said I didn't recommend them doing that) and I got so much criticism and bs ranging from "stop trying to think you have a stock car" to "why don't you sh*t before you start driving to reduce more weight" So just to save the arguement from those flamers, don't suggest it.

I tend to get best mileage on my car when traveling at ~80mph. Also, I have noticed that turning the AC on does not make any difference at all, which is totally opposite from the way my 4-cyl Accord behaves.

I get about the same mileage as Bxscig when I'm driving within the city

on my last tank I got about 23mpg...40% highway, 60% city

but driving is pretty spirited and I usually take turns faster than I should be :p
