I crave more buttons

I have a 2000 Tl. I want more controls on the steering wheel. Specifically, a button to answer the phone. I intend to interface to the buttons myself to make the phone work, but there are, of course, no phone buttons on the steering wheel.

I wonder if the steering wheel controls from the 2003 MDX would be able to mount in place of the old controls and get a signal through the existing wiring? If all the buttons are just resisters, I suppose it might work. Does anyone have any guesses or experience in this modification?

Here are the controls from the mdx:

does your TL even have a integrate phone system? I thought only the 3G tl's had it... But if it is an after market system, you might have a tough time getting the buttons to work with the system.

It does not have an integrated phone. But it will in near future. I'm trying to see if the buttons from an MDX (which include a source button and a button for the phone) could be used in place of the existing button assembly (perhaps with some mounting changes).

I'm wondering if I could wire the MDX buttons where the existing buttons are. I would want to use the same wiring harness and electrical path to get through the steering column. I'm not too worries about having the phone system interpret the signal, I'll use one of those current to IR interfaces (and tell it that its being installed on an MDX). The phone system in integrated with the new HU.

The MDX buttons are not perfect (they have a graphic of a person talking instead of a picture of a phone, for example), but they look like they might blend in with the TL steering wheel.

If they are not purely resistive controls, then it probably won't work. The buttons are a little pricey ($75 on ebay) to get a set just for testing, so I was hoping somone had tried this before. I also have to be sure the resistor values don't match the ones from the OEM cruise control. Unless they use a different harness. But I don't think they do.

Maybr I'll run across a set for less to try it out. I really would like a couple of extra buttons on the column for the phone and audio source...

so, what buttons are on your wheel now? Seems like there is no gain there. Suppose the mode button is what you are going for?
How will you integrate the button to a phone?

I've got the standard volume up/volume down and channel. The 2003 MDX buttons have those plus a mode button, plus a talk button, plus a button that says "back".

I'm not sure what that back button is meant to do, but I'd find some use for it. I suppose it could be for hanging up the phone.

ah, yes now i see them. The mdx is set up for bluetooth integration. The back button takes you to the previous menu or cancels your last entry, or out of handsfree mode altogether.

You could certainly do whatever you want to with the wiring from the buttons (including mode, being that it is not a normal fxn on our radios for remote operation).

Just make sure that the button mount will fit your wheel.

I'm planning to keep the my old steering wheel, but graft on the new buttons. Do you know any reason why that is not possible? There will probably have to be some fabrication work to make it look stock.

I don't have the buttons yet, so I don't know how difficult it will be yet (or if it can be done at all).
