Well...the "Sport Shift" or "SS"...is just a semi-automatic or semi-manual...depending on how you look at it. What the SS does is it gives you more control of the car, specificly, more control of when the car shifts gears. To use the SS, you just move the shift knob into the "left slot" (for a lack of better terms), when you move the knob up, it will upshift, and move it down to down shift. The things is, it's good to upshift to the next gear before it hits to red line, if you past redline for a certain extent, the car will shut off the gas. But i think in the newer TL's it will automatically shift for you it you are in danger. You don't have to downshift, since the computer will automatically do it for you. It won't let you downshift to lower gears if your not in the correct speed range...this is good, so you won't damage your car.

One more thing, you don't take your foot off the gas when you shift.

I have been taking my foot off the gas in SS mode, esp. for a downshift. What is your reasoning for not doing so?

You definitely don't need to take your foot off the gas when downshifting --

People -- the SS is NOT a manual transmission by any means -- it's just a yuppie-automatic tranny that'll let you DOWNSHIFT with more freedom -- if you floor the car from a 0 mph standstill, do you really think it'll matter if you shift the car at its redlines (past 1st gear) or if it's in D5 -- no -- not at all.

About lifting the foot upon downshifting -- the auto tranny is electronically controlled to cut fuel in those milliseconds before the lower gear is positioned and coupled to the torque converter -- ya don't have to worry about it !

minhyme714, This is just my opinion, but you've got it all wrong. First, even newer TL's won't upshift automatically in SS mode (will only upshift only from 1st to 2nd gear). That's a good thing, since it allows you to stay in a lower gear close to redline to preserve torque (for driving in active driving or canyon-carving).

Second, downshifting is one of the main reasons to have the SS. it allows you to prepare for maneuvers so that when you push/floor the gas you don't have to wait half a second to a second for the transmission to downshift. You could do it to pass someone on a crowded highway for example, where passing spots are limited and timing is important.

Just my 2 cents.

Incorrect, the 00+ (I'm not sure about the 99) transmissions have a built in feature that if you run into redline and the hit the rev limiter a few times in a row, the transmission will automatically shift up to the next gear. It's a very good safety feature.

Technically, you can "play" with it like a manual. It was designed to for the driver to have more control of when the gears shift. You can "play" with it all you want...the computer will not allow you to up/down shift when your in the uncorrect speed zones.

Turn off the VSA and really have some fun! The car will rev much higher before shifting to 2nd. I saw that on another post but did not believe it until I tried it. WOW!

VSA controls the wheel slippage in part by "prematurely" shifting into 2nd gear to cut off that low-end torque squeal. If you leave VSA on, and then give it 50% juice and THEN, as soon as you feel the chirping end and the tires lock up on the road surface -- MASH it to stay in 1st (it will stay in first until 25 mph-- at which point even if you mash it you'll remain in 2nd) -- and then you'll get a great launch -- it ain't like practicing driving a manual tranny car -- but it's worth practicing for the fun factor of owning this car.
