High Beam HID's And DRL
High Beam HID's And DRL
I recently installed HID's in my car, high beams. The thing is, I bought them for the low beams but didn't fit in the low beams. It was the same bulb, but the base was different. So I just took out the OEM high beam bulbs, which are kind of fat, and installed the HID bulbs, which are skinny (the size of the low beam bulbs). I got my 3.2TL from Massachusetts but the person I bought it from got it from Canada, so it had Daytime Running Lights. The problem is that ever since I installed the HID's, the Daytime Running Lights don't turn on anymore and the DRL light stays on in the dashboard unless I turn on the headlights. Anybody have any ideas?
Wow, first, remove the HID's from the High Beam. HID's aren't designed for constant on/off operation and the light intensity takes about 30 seconds to reach full brightness. Get the right bulbs for your low beam or use them for your fogs if possible. Use halogen for high beams. Newer cars have HID for high beam, but its the same bulb in some cases that uses a motor to change the bulb position to raise the beam. Example, new TL's. Also, DRL use less wattage while operating to prolong bulb life and not be too bright for oncoming drivers. The HID ballasts require a certain amount of wattage to remain on.
Bottom line, remove HID for highs, replace with halogen!

Like what CJITTY said, the DRLs are made to run on less than stock voltage, and in the Canadian models, the DRLs are controlled by an added "magic box" that does that. For the HIDs, during startup, the inverters bump up the voltage and draw a lot of power to cause the bulbs to arc, before bumping it down to normal 12V. Since your DRLs probably don't supply enough voltage, you may have blown a fuse (hopefully) or fried the DRL "magic box". Swap out the HIDs for the OEM bulbs, and check if your DRLs still work - if not check if there's a DRL fuse somewhere.
For the lowbeams HIDs, you want D2R bulbs not any of those HID bulbs that are rebased (eg: NOT 9006 or 9005s used for the highbeams and fogs).

My car recently got hit and is at the autobody getting fixed. It's going to take a couple of weeks, I'm going to have a few things done to it. The car right now is grey, with the money the insurance gave me, I'm going to paint it black, put the trunk spoiler and the roof spoiler on the back window, and the OEM body kit. I'm also going to get some chrome 19's in the next few weeks. But I will get these pics to y'all ASAP!!!!!
Another question: I want to get some blue hid's for the low beams. Anybody know where I can get them from besides ebay?
Thanks!!!

I think I know the reason why the DRLs wont work. DRLs take the highbeams and run them at 75% (it might be 50%). HIDs from what I understand wont run at 75% or any perecent for that matter. I have been told with HIDs its either on or off and that theres no in the middle. So if thats the case your DRLs will probably be gone with your new HIDs. However, I could be wrong about that so you might want to get a second opinion about what I said. However I am positive that DRLs dim the high beams im just not positive that HIDs can only run at on and off so you might want to check on that.

That's why HID high beams is a stupid idea.
