I have the same issue. When I'm in second gear and have the RPMs above 5K for more than 2 - 3 seconds, my check engine light flashes for 5 - 10 seconds. The computer spits out misfire codes. My dealer says I'm not supposed to drive the car like that... The owners manual basically says that as long as I don't red line, I'm fine. Service advisors response 'I know, but you need to baby your TL' I do, but sometimes I feel the need for speed!

After you replaced the coil packs was there any difference? Or did it run the same just with no engine light....

Is seems a little slower but I did do the whole seafoam process (oil, gas, and vacuum line) but I haven't changed my spark plugs yet and haven't changed my oil but im not sure if that would affect anything with the engine light blinkin. It does it rarely but I do notice that I lost torque or so it seems.

Change your plugs and change your oil and see if it happens again. There is no need to drive like a granny.

I know this is a old thread but I was wondering if anyone has solved this.

This has happened twice to me. Once in August after my seafoam, oil change, and NGK Iridium spark plugs change. I went on a spirited ride and once I got on the highway, I was on tiptronic and went from third to second and stepped on the gas like half way. Once I hit vtec, the CEL started flashing so i shifted up to a regular rpm range and it flashed and went away. After that, I never got a CEL light ever. Even when I tested my transmission and stepped on it completely while going 25mph, the tranny just downshifted smoothly and went with no problems.

And it happened again today, I just got on the highway and I shifted from third to second. I stepped on it lightly and once it hit vtec, the CEL started flashing so I upshifted again and it went away.

I guess it has something to do with being in tiptronic and hitting vtec in 2nd gear. My oil level is near the upper mark.

They should be because I bought them pre-gapped from Advance Auto Parts. Of course it could be pre-gapped wrong but I think this problem only occurs when in tip-tronic and in 2nd gear.

I was on D5 today and when I stepped on the gas, it downshifted to 2nd gear and redlined fine with no CEL or anything and it shifted smoothly.

Misfire. Bad plug(s) and/or coil(s). You'll have P1399 stored as a pending code if you read the DTC after it happens (but before turning the car off).
