Head Unit Removal

I'm sure this question has been asked and answered, but I can't seem to find it with the search feature.

Does anyone have a good write-up on how to remove the head-unit from a 2002 Acura TL with NAVI without breaking anything?

Pictures would be very helpful.

Thanks in advance...

i did it for the first time this past weekend, it can be done in 20 minutes EASY! there are pics available, which i don't have access to right now but you can search for them in the threads.

here is the easiest way to do it (in my opinion):

1. pull the plastic marble trim off the console

2. open the center console and remove the two screws under the 'carpet' on
the bottom of the storage bin. next unscrew the 4 aluminum colored
screws by where it joins to the shifter console. (there are 6 black screws,
but these only hold the cupholder in, so ignore them). you will notice the
two screws with no washer hold the side trimpanels on the shifter console. (by sidetrim i mean the side panels that touch the floor).

when this is done, lift the whole console up and pull it back about 3-4
inches. be gentle though, there is a wire connector for the accessory
power port in the console.

3. remove the kick panel under the steering wheel, there is a screw behind
the fuse panel you need to remove.

4. remove the remaining screw on both sides of the sidetrim on the shifter
console and remove both sides. be gentle so as not to break the 'snaps'
that hold it in place when you remove it. and there is a screw up closer to the dash on each side facing the back seat, holding it in place if you get stuck.

5. wrap a slim flathead screwdriver with some gauze tape or something. you
don't want to marr any plastic for the next steps.

6. pry the tab over the shifter lockout button (refer to your owners manual if
you dont know what it is). then pry the black plastic ring plate around the
shifter up. (careful, the plastic will gouge if you stab it).

7. take the screwdriver and use it to pry up the heated seat switches. easiest way i found is switch them to "HI" and stick the screwdriver under the switch. apply, even, gentle pressure and lift it straight up and unplug them both.

8. remove the plastic cover between the switches that covers the diagnostic port. (no tools needed for this just put your fingers in and you can pull it up).

9. now take the screw driver and remove the plastic trim around the seat switches.

10. you will see 2 screws to either side of the diagnostic port. USE A MAGNET WITH A LONG HANDLE and a screwdriver to unscrew them and remove them. if you drop them its a pain to find them. now with these out remove any screws you see holding the shifter console in place that i may have not mentioned (there shouldnt be too many if any). lift the whole thing up and pull it back. (TIP - put a towel on the silver shifter plate so it doesnt scratch, youll only hate yourself later for it).

11. remove the 3 screws on both sides of the radio, and the four screws holding it in on the sides of the front face. now pull.

12. job done.

installation is really the reverse and easy with a little patience. it truly isnt hard. i can do it in about 10-15 minutes now. hope this isnt too confusing. let me know. anyone who see something i missed, please add it in. thanks.

i know this is old....

so, when the head unit is removed, some of the ac controls are removed also....are these stuck together, or do you detach the head unit from the ac controls? also, if i have a metra dash kit, i just put that in place of the stock unit, right? and everything should fit fine?

so i should put the head unit in the metra dash kit as i put the whole thing back together, i'm assuming, so that way i can just connect the wire harness from the back....

what do i connect the wire harness to? is it obvious when i look at it, it may be, but i've never taken this apart, so i just want to know what to look for.

the controls are seperate from the radio.
you may be able to instal it either way. i installed the kit then the radio. you attach the(metra wire harness for a 99-02 accord) to the headunit then you simply plug it into the factory harness its easy
